Don't you just love all the coverage they are doing with the clyde cancer deaths. But Anyone who has lived in castalia 30 years or more knows someone in castalia or has cancer themselves. I lived on lester st. there isn't a house on lester or adams that I know of that hasn't had someone die of cancer or has cancer. My own father had prostate cancer. Who families have been wiped out by cancer. When are they going to do a story on us. We have had the cancers far longer than clyde. I think it is in the water system. Not the water system that is in place now. But before that water system 30-40 years ago. My whole neighborhood has been wiped out by cancer. The ones that didn't die. Are dealing with it now. Don't we count because we aren't little kids? Where is our outrage? I have a reporter that wants to talk to the cancer survivors of castalia. Is there anyone that wants to talk?

Hello Cheryl, I've been researching closed dumps (landfills) and cancer clusters for 25 years and I want to help you find if there is an environmental cause to your cancers. Sand and gravel pits were often used as dumps after the soil was mined. A topographical map from the 1960s shows quite a few sand pits in and around Castalia. A current aerial map shows that some of those pits have been filled. The topo map also showed areas of "depression" near your Lester Street neighborhood. I don't know if these depressions were pits but it does indicate that the earth was disturbed. One "depression" area is just south of Adams Street. When was your neighborhood developed? Have any serious illnesses been reported in another neighborhood bordered by Maple Avenue, Bogart Road, Barden Street, and Tiffen Ave (101)? On the topo map there were sand pits in the middle of those streets and the current aerial map appears to show that the pits have been filled. You mentioned the water system of 30 years ago. Did Castalia use groundwater for drinking? Do you know where the drinking water wells were located 30 years ago? Does Castalia presently use groundwater for drinking? |

It sounds very much like "Cement" Street Park was a former dump. Historically, gravel pits were often used as dumps after the soil was mined and the deep holes were filled with municipal and industrial wastes. As I mentioned in my last post, there are many sand and gravel pits throughout Castalia. Some have been filled, others have not.(see my last post regarding homes bordering Maple Ave., Bogard Rd., Barden St., and Tiffen Ave.) Parks, golf courses and subdivisions across the country have been developed on top of old dumpsites. A property title search of "Cement" Street Park needs to be done to help determine previous land-use. A property title search of Cement Street and Lester Street would also be a good idea. Is any government agency investigating the cancer cluster? |
