Jim Leljedal, a sheriff's office spokesman, declined to discuss how his office would respond.

"We're not going to negotiate or hammer out a budget compromise in the Sun Sentinel," he said.

Good for him. The SS can go F themselves.

You would think that it would work. But not if the incentives given to the departments that are to be swallowed up are nobody gets fired and everybody gets a raise in exchange for their consent. What we need to fix this is a big recession. Oh wait, it's here. It is going to be get fixed, just wait.

Just raise taxes. Gosh I would not want any union deputy or firefighter to go without a raise while I go broke paying taxes. Great plan, just raise taxes, would not want any of those police officers or firefighters to go withouut a pension. Hell I will live the in poorhouse just to support all those great pensions while I don't have one. Just raise taxes, what is the big deal.

I can understand other services being cut, but cutting any law enforcement positions is a mistake. We just went through numerous shootings and robberies and if we cut law enforcement we are all unsafe.

BSO is a big part of county budget, circa 50 percent. In order for the county to cut its budget they cannot give a pass to BSO. Cutting a program that is 1 percent of a budget by a draconian 50 percent will do nothing overall. Cutting a program that costs 50 percent of county budget by 10 percent will do a lot.

This fiasco is the pot calling the kettle black. Every division of the government should be cutting back. But hey Obama is leading by example so it's a free for all.

A deep recession will make things rational again. The problem is that our politicians are treating this year as a one year problem, and they act like next year will be better. Who knows maybe property values will go straight up and we will be fine. Well due to SOH next year even if property values will go straight up, next year will not be better so if they don't fix problems this year, which they will not, next year will be even more interesting. This is just the beginning of exposing the fact that our taxes are too high and actually our politicians know it. If your taxes are high this is going to be fun to watch the incumbents get voted out the next few years.

Dear Commission:
The election is over! Your candidate Scott Israel lost! I understand that your going to take the authority of running the jails away from the sheriff and appoint Scott Israel as Director of Correctional Services. If this is true, than the U.S. Attorney needs to come to Broward County and start an investigation. This smells like Judy Stern is in involved. She was Scott Israel's Campaign Manager and Campaign Manager and close friend, lobbyist to many of the present Broward County Commissioners. Can anybody say "Your Under Arrest?"

Broward County and its Cities have too may duplicated cost in Police, Fire and EMS. Local contol is getting to be very costly for the taxpayer. You pay for these services once to your City government and then you pay for it again to your County government.

Enough is enough! A contract that gives away taxpayer money should be illegal and must to stopped. Looks like money is being taken from the county and given to BSO contract cities. If this is the case, the Cities must pay it back!

It's very ironic that the 'poor' people who are commenting here still have internet service, LOL! In any event, I think it's great that many democraps are now eating their own, blasting the unions they empowered. However, the demonizing of police officers and other public servants is disturbing. Why would anyone want others to feel financial pain just because they are? I know why, because this is what our new kind, gentle, for the people government wants....... They want everyone to feel pain (except them), period! Indeed, to them police officers represent the rich 'man' that must be humbled and taken down because 'we' won. Let me translate this for you - hard working, taxpayers who have been successful are the enemy since they do not rely on government for their existence.

Obama was right, many of you have hoped for change now change is upon you. Consequently, the new slogan of choice is 'be careful what you wish for'.

BTW: why is everyone so silent about gas prices approaching $3, unemployment >10%, the deficit at all time highs, and the mood of the country so bitter? Last year at this time when things were not as bad we were told that the sky had fallen. Wake up sheep, you have been fed c r a p sandwiches and you gobbled them up like it was roast beef. Do you like the after taste?

The bail out that Bush (the dummy) started didn't work. All we have in the White House is a new dummy trying the spend his way out of this, and spend us into his socialist plan. So, be prepared for things getting worse once we start paying his tab via much higher taxes. If you think things are bad now just wait until you start paying for the 'let's go green' BS.

This is what happens when liberal nuts get to run the nut house.....

I am not sure, but it sounds like your "crack" pipe has been working overtime. All law enforcement/corrections officers pay taxes. It is deducted from their paychecks. You would pay taxes too if you weren't spending so much time flicking that cheap lighter.
