Welcome back my old friend....but let's have a balanced view. How about some input from US Steel Public Relations? Or the USW Propaganda Office? Hmmmmm....maybe they want to consult with their Lethal -- I mean LEGAL -- Departments first. |

A follow-up to my previous posts. The Clairton Coke Works operates in violation of government regulations AND industry standards 24/7. This includes continuous and flagrant violations of FEDERAL law. Since Federal Law supercedes local ordinances, it would seem that the issuance of these permits to a known violator are themselves in violation of the Supremacy Clause of the US Constitution.
Perhaps the Waterfront should secede from the Union. Let's face it, those bums really have nothing in common with the American people anyhow. Let them run up a swastika fro their new flag and for their logo a skull-and-crossbones! |

You clearly have an issue with USS Coke Works. You did not mention Neville Island, nor did you mention The Transit. What about the fumes from the buses. And do you yourself practice what you preach. |

1 Points well taken......but let's start with the worst offenders and work down. The overriding issue with the Coke Works is that it effectively locks any new industries out of the MonValley and locks its economy down. It is an obsolete facility that can no longer compete in the free market and is being kept of life-support in the form of government subsidies, tarriffs and import quotas. Thus it is not only a polluter but can only stay in operation as a rifoff of the American people. Shut it down, blow it up and plow it under......and give thes rest of the MonValley a chance. |

You have brought up valid points. Neville Island is home to 24 industrial facilities and contribute 25% to the polution in Allegheny County. NIGNC Neville Island Good Neighbor Committee is also working toward positive change for their area, just as REACH is to the Mon Valley. As far as buses and diesel vehicles go strides are meing made to correct the emissions. School buses and dump trucks are receiving retro fitting for their vehicles paid for by grants to reduce pollution. The Clairton transportation fleet, ALL vehicles were evaluated and are now in the process of being retrofitted with emission reducing devices. Some school districts (affulent ones) and private trucking firms have to pay for the retrofitting themselves, but the devices are available, and alot are stepping up and making necesary changes. True, the coke works is not the only emitter of toxins, but they are in my neighborhood, and they are responsible for making people sick (more research is being done to prove this) so the pressure must remain on them until they complete the needed upgrades to clean the air like they have promised. We must also keep pressure on politicians to adopt clean air standards for our area. |

While the environmental damage is itself totally unacceptable, it also makes it impossible for another OTHER facilities to get a construction permit or operating license. New industry is thus effectively locked out and the the economy locked down. All for the sake of an old dump that cannot compete and is being kept alive with government funds -- on which it then proceeds to break the law! Yet they are HANDED permits which they will not use, for improvements that they will never implement and a blind eye is turned to this latest round in forty years of political chicanery. When are people here going to finally give up on this ripoff! |

The Great Depression 2 is underway. Where are they going to sell their additional products anway? It would trully be an economic move to reduce or stop the additional growth and see what China is going to do.
More and more it might be to their advantage to urge the government to declare Eminent Domain and pay and move owners and renters and tear down a thousands of buildings. This would shut up most critics and inject cash into the area and allow "house locked" mortgage owners and dead end renters the chance to leave a dirty ghost town. |
