If you abdicate the responsibility for your own safety, you have to settle for the response you receive from others who try to help.

Q. Why weren't police dispatched to help Day before she lay dying on the ground?
A. Dispatched to where, she was never able to tell the 911 operator where she was. Q. Why did her cell phone call initially bounce to the Sunrise 911 center while she was driving in Planation? A, Ask the FCC and the cell phone companies, they control the cellular telephone system no the Plantation police department or any other law enforcement agency. P.S. you spelled Plantation wrong. Q. Why weren't police at the station waiting outside to meet Day after she called to say she was on her way. A. See question one and the answer. Comment: The individual responsible for this was the individual who was staking her. Had her family called the police when he forced his way into their home this may have been avoided, |

Have you listened to the 911 tape? She did say where she was & where she was headed....to the Plantation PD which is 12 blocks from her house. All the while the killer was shooting at her & ramming her car as she tried to drive & talk to 3 (yes 3) different 911 operators.
Forget who he is and say this: "Ma'am, help is on the way." Now we know NO ONE was dispatched. The operator knew she was going to Plantation PD...how about dispatching all available cars to this location? It never happened. We need to learn from this incident and use it as a training tool. As for those who are blaming surviving family members, I call tell you no one knew he had a gun on her and if they did they all would have been dead because he was going to take out anyone who got in his way. Olidia took him away from the family and saved their lives. Yes, he was the one who killed her and probably nothing could have saved her, but I think she believed she could get help and there lies the issues. There is a need to make the 911 system better as well as informing the public how to use the system when they need it. This also reinforces the need to standardize training for 911 across the state if not the country. Every region & situation will have it's variables but this is also a wake up call to get back to basics...every second counts! PS: You spelled stalked wrong. |

Yes I did just my clumsy fingers on the key board, but then again I do not have an editor that is supposed to check the editorial before it is published. You are right she did talk to different 911 operators in two different jurisdiction, remember the problem with the cell phone towers? Dispatching all available cars to this location, this may work in the movies/TV, but in real life when the entire is over from start to finish in 204 seconds, the reality is that it would not have helped. Yes, there should be lessons learned from this incident, and the Plantation PD will conduct an after action report. |

2nd Amendment may have been helpful here.

Well apparently you can get cars from every jurisdiction when it's a officer in need, so don't tell me it can't be done. Let's try to save citizens instead of showing up for the clean up. I think it's called equal protection under the law and that would be the 14th Amendment.
I think that police & 911 assumed that this was a typical domestic situation and that they may not respond to these calls with a sense of urgency. Aren’t the police supposed serve & protect all people? I live in Cape Coral so I am quite aware of the loss of Rookie officer Andrew Widman, 30, who was shot & killed after he stepped in to break up a dispute between a man and a woman. Yes those who serve know it's job with danger on every encounter, domestic or not. My heart goes out to his family & fellow officers. |
