1 Generation X did not have such an easy skate, as Mr. Anthony would like to portray. Many Gen Xers were born during Vietnam, grew up with Watergate, Three Mile Island, the first Space Shuttle Disaster, AIDS, the hostage crisis in Iran, the 1972 Munich Olympics (hostage taking and murdering was very popular in the 70s) record-setting inflation, ample fears of the very same pissing contest with the USSR that previous generations endured, and a host of other unpleasant points in our nation's collective culture and history. Reagan cut budgets so tight on everything but the military that many in our generation lost opportunities they never recovered, unlike Boomers who grew up when America was still a financial superpower and opportunities were plentiful and benefits and paydays bountiful. But you're right. We didn't have The Beatles. Instead, we had Nirvana, who could actually play more than three chords. We didn't have Woodstock, instead we had the US Festival and Live Aid, which focused on helping others vs. a giant, self-indulgent, mud-infused orgy. What a horror Gen X has been to American culture! Baby Boomers gave us the "drug culture," as well as the financial 'wizards' of Wall St. who got us into our current economic mess - not to mention the prior Savings and Loan mess during Bush I. They produced a functionally illiterate former President who couldn't chew a pretzel without nearly killing himself, let alone provide leadership during a time of crisis. Yes, Boomers offered the world so much more than Gen X, a generation that, according to this article, is guilty of the grievous sin of enjoying the beauty of an actress and the music of a pop star because they supposedly didn't have anything else to do with their time. I realize Boomers are bitter about getting old, but what's really gotten old is that they keep taking out their angst and their superiority complex on Generation X. I think they spent too much time looking at their reflection on the hood of their Mercedes while polishing their car. You'd think they'd have gotten bored of the bashing by now. Perhaps the "Me" generation should evolve and quit whining about the imaginary woes of their youth vs. that of others already. Your parents, the Greatest Generation, you know - those people who put you through college and who you put in a nursing home, are the ones who had it tough. You skated, so quit whining already. This is not a time to deliberate the evils of Generation X or any other Generation, Mr. Anthony. Surely you should have realized that when writing your article. This is a time to be respectful that our culture lost three icons in a very short time period. Perhaps if there was less need to try to pit generations against each other in some rivalry, we'd have more of a sense of cultural community in our nation instead of a desperate need to have one generation's supposed legacy outweigh that of others for no reason other than ego. |

Well said. I'm saddened by these icons passing... they will be missed and admired for all of their shining moments.
