Since I went away to school I've forgotten about all the times that Northfield police harrassed me for no reason when I was a teenager living in the are. Back when lived in Whitmore it was'nt uncommon for myself or my friends to be pulled over at least once a week by cops looking for a reason to make an arrest or write a ticket. The funny thing is that I never seemed to be doing anything wrong, and the cops never really had anything on me, therefore they never wrote me a ticket. None the less, I was still searched and breathalized about half of the time; the cops there seem to carry a stigma that all young kids around the area are up to no good (not to mention that I was one of the few minorities in the area, though I try not to consider that as an excuse for being pulled over)

I understand that they have to do their job, but since I've moved away, I havent experienced any law enforcement harassment like I did in Whitmore Lake.

David Powell is a useless sorry excuse for a law enforcement officer. He harrasses teenagers. He's like Barney Fife. An embarrassment to the police dept. He's currently with Northfield Twp. He and Taylor Scripps like to pull teens over and search them for no reason. Don't take crap from them, they're well known for the harrassment.

Don't ever move to Whitmore Lake. They have so much money they could make improvements with but they do nothing. The taxes are ridiculous. You don't get any services, no garbage pick up, no clean up of the streets. South Lyon's taxes include garbage pick up. You can rake leaves into the street and the city of South Lyon will come by and pick them up. AND the cops are bullies for sure! Please vote no on the next police millage. People shouldn't be treated like that.

In response to John and Denise. First of all, they are known for taking drugs off the street, along with drunk drivers and stopping criminal acts. Maybe your upset because you use drugs or drink or like to steal instead of work, I dont know. Usually the people that dont like cops are the people doing wrong. As for Denise, I agree they could make many improvements!!! But bullies? look at crime stats and you will see the age range for most crimes and then maybe you can start to understand. Finally, I would only call it harassing if the people stopped never did anything wrong and were just good kids, but I highly doubt that is the case.

well, I never did anything wrong and I got stopped all the time. the only thing I did wrong was drive a nice car and look and dress different than what whitmore lake is used too. one time I had a whitmore cop ask me if I bought my car with drug money, which was uterly offensive. so yes, I would call that harrassment.

What police agency are you with, Citizen? Your views are just like one from a cop, or a close relative. Just looking for a little feedback?

Well, W.L. cops have pulled me over 18 times in a years time without ever giving me a ticket, or a warning.

Can you say probable cause? I got pulled over because my vehicle was previously owned by someone who was in and out of trouble a lot.

I told the last cop that if I were to be pulled over one more time with no probable cause, or ever getting a ticket for anything that I would sue the blue right off of them. I also followed up with a letter to the Chief from my attorney.

I haven't been pulled over in that car in the area since that letter was sent.

It's BULL puckey that I had to threaten them with a lawsuit to get that to stop.

I don't mid cops doing their job at all, in fact I'm glad they do what they do. But when the power trips make them nasty, and arrogant - that's where I draw he line, and I won't take it. I do not need my car searched on a bi weekly basis, being pulled over for no apparent reasons, and there is never anything in it to be worried about in the first place is where I take exception.

Policemen are as susceptible to corruption as anyone, maybe even more. It takes a real special person to know where the lines are. Many, FAR too many do not feel there are boundaries, in my opinion.

I have yet to be harrassed by the poilce here, my wife was pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt and the cop just let her go. he did not try to search the car or test her for drinking or harrasse her in any way. The is a thing where one cop can make a whole station look bad and maybe thats what we are seeing. i have had parties with drinking a loud music and even a fight but the cops were called came over and said have a nice night try to keep the noise down and this was around 1 oclock in the moring. if you have a job the best thing you can do is to do the job RIGHT and their job is to keep people safe and to stop crime and deter crime as much as possible. (maybe some body gave them information stating you were doing something wrong and that is why they were bothering (harrassing you).

Hi Dray and Citizen...There is so much crime in this community. A friend of mine had to put up a camera in order to get something done about it. Had to have it on tape!! But, the cops sure can (no, I'm not talking about all of them, some of them are normal law enforcement officials, not Powell and Scripps) pick on teens that are just being teens. These guys have nothing to do but cruise around, boredom sets in. Sometimes they like to drive 45 miles per hour down Main St for no reason, with the siren and lights going OF COURSE. They'll go a few miles then turn them off. I've seen it! I hope when their kids are going through their teen years, they get harrassed by their local cops. Dray...are you sure your last name isn't Powell????

Dray, you seem like a level headed guy with common sense and I'm sure the Police appreciate your comments. Regarding the lights and sirens on and then off again, I heard that sometimes they get a call then it gets cancelled hence lights on and then off. Denise, you contradict yourself, first you say there is alot of crime, then you same they are bored. Maybe you think it's like CSI and everything gets solved in an hour. And for njneere, that's coming from common sense not from a relative or agency it just stands to reason that without evidence or a witness, it's not that easy of a task.
Now, you both seem stuck on these two officers for whatever reason. Maybe they wrote you a ticket, arrested you, or stopped you and did their job. You cant complain that there is all this crime and cops do nothing then when they do their job you complain again. Obviously I have a connection somewhere hence my opinions, but even if I didn't, it wouldn't change my views. I think you and most people have no idea of the job and what it entails, I heard the stories.
Again my views may be skewed but maybe you need to see what goes on here or anywhere and see the drugs, and alcohol, the husbands beating their wives, dead people from drugs and accidents, etc... I've heard but dont want to see but I also understand. I guess what I'm getting at is, who are you going to call when someone's breaking in, assaulting you, driving drunk and could kill your loved one, the POLICE.

For the most part I think that these officers are just doing their job. In my opinion the only time an officer will be "harassing" as some say is if that person is being disrespectful or is doing something illegal. Maybe some people shouldn't be judging the actions of the officers but should be judging the actions of themselves. Being and officer I'm sure is not an easy job. Seeing the things they see almost everyday and trying to save and protect lives is not an easy task. Just read the newspaper or watch the news and you will see what kind of world we now live in. People take things for granted and want to get away with everything and anything even if it means putting someone else's life in danger. So maybe the next time you get pulled over you should show some respect and realize that they are just there to protect you and everyone else and are just doing their jobs.

You know most cops Ive ever met have been very nice and helpful. I have personally een helped a couple times. The problem is no one will take personal responsibility for their own actions. Stop being a punk, stop seeding, acting a fool and drive responsibily and you may not have problems with cops.

It's easy to use the police officers of Northfield township as scape goats. The people who are doing this have probably been pulled over a time or two or three. The parents of the children who have been in trouble are probably in this category as well. Parents think that their kids are angels. News flash --- if they are in trouble with the law repeatedly there is a good reason. Stop babying them and let them take responsibility for their own actions. Your enabling them to keep up the same bad routine by blaming others for their mistakes. And if your a person who is constantly getting pulled over by the police don't scream harrassment. Because if it were actually harrassment then you would go through the legal system to make sure the officer was punished. No you didn't do this because there was a lagit reason for getting pulled over. I've been pulled over a time or two, the reason doesn't matter, but I deserved it and each time had a pleasant incounter with the officer who is Mr. Powell. He is just doing his job. Seems like Mr. Powell is busy during his shift. Does this mean he's harassing people or just actually working for the citizens of his township...

In response to Bea's useless comment- Officer Powell does harass the citizens of Northfield Township. He targets the younger generation and it almost seems as if he feels threatened by them. Once he knows a person's name he will harass them almost every time he sees them. I have personally been followed for no reason at all. He also spreads rumors to the police force as well as other citizens that he pulls over. Officer Powell is a waste of the township's money and should be removed from the police force. I personally know at least four people who are pressing charges on the township for harassment by Officer Powell.

Frank,

Are you an upstanding citizen? I'm guessing that he supposedly harasses you personally too? Regarding following you, isn't that his job or is he suppose to wait until crime comes to him? Do you realize, as sad as it is, that most crime is committed by the younger generation? It seems as though everyone writing is part of the problem. If you are out there causing problems, committing crimes, hurting people, or selling/using drugs, then you as a citizen should want officers out there that want to work and help and try to make a difference. Cops are suppose to observe right? Well how do they do that if they don't follow a car or watch someone or be proactive? Don't be mad because you did something wrong and got caught, be a man and accept it and realize, believe it or not, you will have kids one day and you sure as hell won't want these types of people on the road, in the streets, and especially, near your kids, and without a doubt, you will want officers out there trying to get those people where they belong, in jail.

Officer Powell....aka "Citizen",
It is not his job to purposely harass and go out of his way to follow upstanding citizens like myself. Who said anything about causing problems, committing crimes, hurting people, or selling/using drugs? The people I am talking about are just having some fun like any younger person should be able to do. Partying on the weekend with a group of friends is hardly a reason to go to jail. The jails are too full as it is and Powell should be out looking for real criminals instead of some kids trying to have fun. In regards to your statement to be a "man"; everyone that I know who is harassed by Powell is far more of a man than he is. The people he harasses have full-time jobs and don't use any drugs. Powell may have it in his head that these are bad people for wanting to party on the weekend but he is very mistaken.
