Thanks to all the people who risked the fines by bringing 'illegal' fireworks to the celebration at Seabright Beach, and thanks to the officers that turned a (mostly) blind eye on them... You made the evening very enjoyable, and carried on a National tradition in a (mostly) safe, respectful way. I look forward to next years' celebration, with a smile on my face... good job everyone!

The worst part of this celebration is always the garbage these tourists leave behind on our beaches. Thanks for visiting our nice town, but please remember to pack your damn trash. We don't mind the visitors. What we don't appreciate is the brazen disrespect the tourists have for the natural environment and wildlife of the beaches they visit. The garbage they leave behind after 4th of July is out of control. There should be at least a
1,000 dollar fine for littering too. Keep our beaches clean.PACK YOUR TRASH. especially if you are a visitor. And as a city we should consider enforcing strict penalties for littering on the beach.

Good call on making the heading and first word stabbing. If you would like to throw fear at us even more like fox news, use words like ALERT in all caps or how about Danger in Santa Cruz!!!!!! Minus the stabbings and the numerous calls scpd and fire had to deal with it was a pretty calm night in our calm happy city.

Usually, the police don't deal with the rich Aptos residents that have commercial grade bombs, choosing instead to turn a blind eye. Those people are crazy, and some time one will be severely injured. It's not safe to be there, especially Beer Can. Tha Aptos snobs have a sense of entitlement.

Weird. I'm in Southern California currently, and yesterday we noticed that none of us had heard or seen private fireworks at all. This is in stark contrast with Santa Cruz. Do you think this results from the fact that cities put on displays over the ocean or lakes, or that the people are more wildfire conscious, or local culture?

Truth well spoken. The city of Santa Cruz (The cops and the laws) should just let people have fireworks on the beach. They don't mind all the money they bring in, but try and have a little fun in this town and watch out. What a police state Santa Cruz has turned into. Next year just send your money in but just stay home. That should be the motto of the SCPD and its city council.

Snobbery doesn't begin and end at the town limits, but unless cops get calls for the locals who are shooting off major fireworks, cops can't just be driving around Aptos streets looking for it.

Having said that, as a neighbor of the Imperial Courts townhomes, I'd like to voice a complaint about the massive fireworks the people there set off in their park area. The whole neighborhood sounds like a war zone and the little sparks and debris from their fireworks fall on nearby homes. It's crazy nerve wracking and not very considerate.

They're talking about the railroad trestle of the Mighty San Lorenzo, human powered. It does, technically, end in a path that leads to East Cliff Drive.

Boy, the local libs must be ever so graetfull for the criminals amongst their neighbors who set off the illegal fireworks for their entertainment. It makes the booze and pot parties so much more vibrant and exciting doesn't it? Right in the spirit of celebrating our nations DEPENDENCE Day Holiday courtesy of the Socialist Democrats! How come the Socialists haven't confiscated sufficient tax dollars from the local libs to put on a real extraviganza? Whaz up with dat?

The Idea that lighting up fireworks has to do wit patriotic spirit is complete and utter nonsense, it is selfish, irresponsible and dangerous to those around the pyrotechnics
(come to think of it, THAT is the American way)
owning and being caught w fireworks should be punished severly, and those caught
should be singled out in the community as nothing more than selfish, dangerous A-
holes.

No the plethorial of liberals in Santa CRuz love the money the tourists bring in but they hate the tourist crowds. Regulated pirotechnic shows were banned by the liberal radical environmentalists because they feared the burnt particulate matter might negatively inhibit some creatures residing peacefully in the Bay! It's ironic the local libs would rather the criminal element set off all manner of illegal explosions the larger totality of which the larger masses particulate matter is spread more evenly throughout the entire county which adjoins the shoreline! Odd but when one realizes liberalism is a mental disease one can at least understand the illogical reasoning presented by those practioners!

It is unbelievable how badly the City of Santa Cruz mishandles the fourth of July. If they had any sense at all they'd stop spending massive amounts of money and manpower on trying to enforce their ridiculous ban on fireworks and instead spend some on organizing fireworks displays in a few areas of the county. It's clear people want to celebrate the 4th with fireworks and are going to do it no matter what. Wouldn't it be better psychology to try to "take charge" of that and run with it, rather than fight it?

That's an interesting spin on the reason they stopped doing a pro show off the boardwalk beach. My understanding it that it was annually drawing more people to down than could be dealt with and the last year there was grid lock, the power went out, and someone died when an ambulance couldn't get to them or couldn't get them out.

That's why the po po is cracking down now. The situation had gotten out of control on the beaches and in the neighborhoods. I am extremely happy to see most of these d**che bags kicked off the beach the last couple years. Maybe they'll have the manpower to hammer the problems in the neighborhoods next year caused by tourists, drunk and crack head locals and the rich pyro elitists.

People is SoCal are not environmentall conscious. They're a bunch of car driving, pollution spewing pseudo-liberals. The reason you don't have illegal fireworks there is the larger police presence and the lack of access to many beaches, because the rich have blocked them off with "colonies."

Santa Cruz and points north are superior to SoCal in everyway, except for two: warmer water and more fake boobs. SoCal wins those hands down. Congratulations. Now please go read your local paper and leave us alone.

Daily Horoscope for January 5

Virgo

You aren't fooling anyone - it's easy for everyone else to see that inexperienced people are unaware of their obligations, Virgo. You're grumpy about starting a familiar process from the beginning again, but don't let that get in the way of getting on with it. Sour grapes have no place in your daily dealings. Although you may 'own' a project, it's ultimately in the hands of someone else. Deal with it and then move on.
