I am interested in the crash in '58. I would like to know the location where the bus went over, or see any pictures anyone may have. Accounts of the event would be great too. I have narrowed it down to 2 locations, but am still not sure. any info. would be great!!

No, it happened on Feb 28, 1958. It happened on the curve at Knotley Hollow, just past the Goble Roberts Bridge, near where the remains of a motel is (the sign is still up). I had an uncle on that bus, and he survivied, and never went back to school after that day.

it happened about 150ft from where I live, it was right past the goble roberts bridge on the left side of the road if your going towards prestonsburg from allen on the old road. My grandpa was one of the guys that helped pull the kids out. I don't really know much on it since I wasn't born and my grandpa died when I was something like 2 months old.

I was 5 yrs. old and my aunt was on the bus. At five years old I'll still remember the look on my grandmothers face when she and my aunt came to my house. An entire community of children gone and heart broken. it will never be forgotton

I'm from Pike Co. but my grandmother had the newpaper clipping with all the children's pics in an old homemade frame hanging in one of her bedrooms. I was born in 65 and have seen it all my life. She is passed now but I think the clipping are still there in the house. We moved somethings after she passed but I know that wouldn't have been discarded. A real piece of our area's history. Seems like I heard someone say there is going to be a documentary about it.

Yes, this was such a tragedy. I have always been interested in this story too and my heart has always ached for the Momma's and Daddy's whose children were killed that dreadful day. I remember reading one time about a family whose body had not been found after the accident for several days. Those who were working the rescue found the child days after the accident and the Daddy was there when the body was found. Don't you just cry hearing that.

One point I really want to make is that I read recently that a program would be presented at the MAC in February about this tragic event. I think someone has made a documentary film about this and that will be shown at the MAC. Call the MAC or go to the website and learn more.

Thank you.

This has got to be one of the most heart-breaking and tragic events that I know of. This accident involves so much sadness, and acts of heroism. One story in particular, a brother would not exit the sinking bus without his younger sister. He went back in and made his way towards the front in an effort to find her, and both did not survive. In another story, a 14 year old boy made several trips swimming back and forth saving all the kids he could.

Ironically, it was bus #27, the bus driver was age 27, and the total lives lost was 27. The accident happened on Feb. 28th, 1958. I read that the day before, a different bus was driven on this route because the regular one (bus #27) was being serviced. The alternate bus had a faulty emergency exit door and it was wired shut. If the accident had've happened the day before, there probably would've been many more casualties.

I feel for the parent's and families that had to endure such a terrible tragedy. God Bless the children on that bus and may their memory never be forgotten.
I hope this helps

Ralph Stanley has a very good, but sad, song about the incident. I think the name of the song is "No school bus in heaven" or something similar. Also "the Flood of 57".

Imagine what the survivors feel living with the memories of that day. Wondering how they made it out when so many of their childhood friends did not. Not to mention, having to live with what they heard, and saw that morning. God Bless them.
