As I watch estimated home values in the area dive on Zillow over the past months, I'm now wondering about the impact on the area of pending changes at Wyeth due to the planned buyout by Pfizer:
- Does anyone have an update of what this deal means to Collegeville?
- Will jobs be cut here?
- Employees transferred to other locations?
Thanks in advance.

My understanding from speaking to a a wife of an employee that the site will close by Aug 2009. All jobs will be cut - that is the Pfizer way.

I can't imagine that the entire facility is going to close by August. Maybe a round of layoffs, but a complete shutdown in 2 months time would be a bad move for a Pfizer, a publicly-traded company of that size.

google Pfizer and Pharmacia. Pfizer is famous for absorbing the company, taking the products, and a few good employees and throwing the rest out with the bath water. The minute I heard they bought Wyeth I knew the area was in for a huge downturn. Pfizer does not care about our community they only care about the bottom line.

I understand what you're saying. But I think that facility closing its door in 8 weeks time is not going to happen.

Regardless, hopefully someone else will swoop in and take that location if Wyeth vacates. It's a great facility.

Or, an Olive Garden. Anytime someone breaks ground, and Olive Garden is always the first rumor!

Olive Garden is already being built across the street from Wyeth.

What would Olive Garden do with 1 million square feet?

Try 2 million sq. ft. The site will remain and jobs will return with the new owner. It will take 6 months or more for Pfizer to transition the site. A year from now is about the time for another grand opening...

FYI: Here's a good article from 1 May 2009 Philadelphia Business Journal about the situation:

No one but Pfizer execs know the answer for sure, but word around Wyeth is that decisions will be made public in September 09 (but this decision keeps being pushed back further and further, so who can really say).

Wait and see...

I have heard the rumors that Glaxo SmithKline are looking at moving their center city operations out and have also heard that J&J and Penn State are considering the facilities too. There are an anticipated 17,000 layoffs between the two organizations, some of which have already transpired but if the site closes it will likely be a phase out over the coming year. We should know if a few weeks!

Even if Olive Garden bought the million square feet, there would still be a two hour wait on a Tuesday!

It's funny. Some of my friends and I were just talking about that place. One guy says, "I worked there back when it was Smith Kline." I said, "I worked there when it was Rohrer." Another guy says, "I worked there when it was Aventis." I said, "And now it's Wyeth? I wonder how many companies have been there over the years?" So, I googled it, and came up with this thread. Amazing.

They actually just changed the sign on the corner of highway 29 tonight (Thursday, October 16) from saying "Wyeth" to "Pfizer."

Importantly, they have announced that they will leave the Collegeville campus open (at least for now!).

Just heard from a high-up at Wyeth that the Collegeville facility will remain open for 3 years and then they will reassess. There will be layoffs, but it won't close right now.

It's important that you keep that famous bull-headedness in check over the next couple of weeks. Be cool, calm and sensible and you'll find that you end up with things correctly and tidily done. Stick to the straight and narrow, no matter what the distractions or irritations around you. If you think outside the square, you'll begin to see how visualisation can change and shape your life.
