Two wheelin': University police trade four wheels for two

Full story: Chico Enterprise-Record

Chico State University police officers haven't abandoned their patrol cars just yet, but they'll be doing much of their traveling on two wheels from now on, rather than four.

This seems really silly. Why not get them something a little more dignified, like a Rascal?

We saw one these guys cruising and talking to some kids the other day. They actually seemed like a good idea in one way: They don't make any noise, so the officer can actually hear what's going on outside and around him. Seems to make sense. I don't know how they do up hills but that's not too big an issue. On the other hand, it does seem like a waste of $$ given our budget and the fact that a $300 mountain bike does essentially the same things these contraptions can do, with the added bonus of giving the rider some exercise.

An officer will most likely hurt himself worse on one of those contraptions than he would on a bicycle. The concept of a scooter was meant to be propelled by 6 year old using foot power. How are they going to respond quickly to off campus locations they patrol? Reichel is no more qualified or capable of running the UPD organization than Bush Jr was at running the nation. Electric scooters! The officers are excited about them? I'm glad those officers work at the college cause they sound like goobers.

The detractors may laugh. They're probably advocates for Hummer-type patrol vehicles. I own an electric scooter, made by eGO. It has capabilities similar to, if not better than, the specs reported for the PD vehicles. Mine's reliable, efficient, inexpensive to operate, quiet, doesn't emit pollutants and is a kick to ride. The campus PD made a good decision.

Do they have a reverse? If not, at least they can't be backed into lamppost.

This is actually a pretty good idea. They won't need as many scooters as they would bikes because one size fits all, so maybe they are saving $ there, in addition to the gas, maintenance and wear and tear on cars that they are saving.

With bikes, they would have to have different sized frames. I mean, look at how tiny the Officer on the left is. He would definitely need a very small framed bike. While some of the other Officers are so tall that they would bang their knees on the handlebars of a bike that small, so they would have to have bigger ones. You couldn't just get one small one and one big one, because then when the bigger Officers are working, there wouldn't be enough bikes.

They should look into a lift for that small Officer though. The poor little guy won't be able to see over the cars on his scooter!

"This is the ideal solution for officers who don't want to be on foot or ride bicycles," Reichel said.

Here is an ideal solution for you. Stop spending money on toys for lazy cops. Or stop whining about the campus not having enough money.

How is spending $7,000 a savings. Use the bikes they already have or walk! All they do is ticket people riding their bikes on campus. Ironically we can't ride on campus do to safety reasons. All because some fatty killed someone on her bike 20 years ago. Now they can chase the students who cross the tracks in the wrong area. PIGS!

Big-Wheels would have been cheaper and more fun for the public. Hard to get serious about a cop on a Big-Wheel.(Do they still make them?)

Daily Horoscope for December 8

Aquarius

This is a good day for getting on with chores and mundane tasks. You'd much rather get them out of the way than have them hanging over you for any longer than necessary. What's more, you don't want to waste your time by doing things in the wrong order or by being so slapdash that you have to do something a second time. You're setting a terrific example right now!
