It is highly unlikely that she, an expert bike rider, would crash for no reason. Numerous less experience bikers ride down Brown's Canyon all of the time. It is more probable that she was hit or "dusted off" by a passing car or truck. Unfortunately some local drivers still think it is fun to cruise close to bicyclists and hit the gas pedal or horn. This type of action, or being brushed by a mirror could easily have caused the crash. The local police seem to always want to blame the cyclist. There would be no skid marks from this type of "hazing" incident. Sadly, we will probably never know what happened.

Always blame the driver. How typical. It could also have been a wind gust, a headset malfunction, a tire shimmy, she might have sneezed, or temporarily lost consciousness from a medical condition. It could also have been an act of God. Sometimes it's just time to go.

Fellow Biker, i don't understand why you immediately assume that the accident was caused by a motorist. There is no proof of this. The accident could have just as easily been caused by the rider herself. You're correct about the fact that we probably won't ever know what happened, but blaming motorists is a rather knee-jerk reaction, don't you think?

And while we're on the subject, the next time i wind up behind a cyclist doing 10mph up deer valley drive during rush hour.... my horn WILL be in effect!

I am compelled to respond. 10 mph up Deer Valley Dr. is a decent speed - after all no one comes to Park City for a rat race. You can find that elsewhere. Wait your turn and leave 3 feet when you pass.
Most bike crashes are not fatal, so this is suspicious. But, accidents are just that: accidents (look it up for a definition). Let's not be combative and weaken motorist-cyclist relations, and undermine the safety Summit county offers. Trying to hurt each other on a message board hurts us all. Most of all it adds to the suffering of this family. Please respect the passing of a great citizen.

I'm wondering if she may have suffered a stroke, seizure or heart attack. Something about this just doesn't sound right otherwise. Why did she go down at all? Something had to have caused the accident.

Unfortunate accident. I have to say that there are problems from both ends. In neighborhoods with bike lanes, such as Draper, bike riders seem to enjoy either not using the lanes, riding on the "edge" of the lane close to the cars (when they have plenty of space to their right, or riding in groups of 2 or 3 side by side. I'm sorry, but streets are primarily for motor vehicles. We can share the road, but bike riders need to be understanding also.

10 mph you have a great point. I just get annoyed by cyclists who choose to use Deer Valley Drive instead of the perfectly servicable biking and walking trail adjacent to city park. Some of my friends are cyclists and they tell me ther reason is that they don't like dodging walkers on the trail. I respond that i don't like dodging THEM on the roads!

Brian: I think i agree with you. It does seem a little odd the way this went down.

My husband of thirty-one years, he was fifty-three died of massive head trauma in April. He was riding with several other cyclists when a dog ran out in front of him. He also just fell over his feet still attached to the pedals. He was going about twenty miles per hour. He was brain dead eight hours after the accident. There are always obstacles and endless possibilities for terrible things to happen. Yes he was wearing a helmet.
