We need to find jobs for ALL Indiana inmates, instead of letting them sit, read, play basketball and watch t.v. on the taxpayers' dollar. No wonder they have time to spend hundreds of hours making a knife out of thread...it's ridiculous.

This so American, take jobs from the hard working public by sending them out the country for slave labor to pad Companies & Exec's pockets...

Now pack another human being "One", "1", American Dollar to fix tranmissions. Their are about 300 Mechanics in Anderson, IN out of work and a host of others in Indianapolis.

How much is our Government paying the transmisson company, are postal rates going down. I doubt it ! Great Business !

Funny because the Post Office won't even hire ex-felons. So who's gonna hire these guy's with these great skills when they get out !

If these so-called mechanics are out of work, it is their own fault they can't find another job because last I heard there are a lot of jobs out there for auto mechanics.

You people don't get it! The important thing here is that Commissioner Donahue got his name in the paper which means he gets more points with Mitch.

"Only inmates with more than three years left on their sentences and who have shown good conduct will work on the transmissions, said prison spokesman Tim Horan.
The prison does not want to train workers only to have them leave in a few months, he said."

That makes a lot of since. Nice way to get people ready for the world.

What a deal! This is even cheaper than illegal immigrant labor. These jobs should be in the private market with the training and jobs going to the curently un and under employed. Since this country inprisons more people per/capita than any other country expanding this type of thing is akin to slave labor.

Tell the UAW to quit going on strike and they wouldn't have to send the jobs to mexico....
The real funny thing is that the post office is a federal employer....of course they won't hire ex-felons that know how to work on transmissions.... but maybe they could actually get a job working in a body shop.....and at least they have a skill other than hustling drugs.

Right, the last thing you want to do is give them a skill that might allow them to gain meaningful employment on the outside and turn their lives around. Isn't that supposed to be part of their rehabilitation?

I forgot this is Indiana we don't rehabilitate our prisoners.

You hit the nail on the head! That, and it might get more points for Mitch. It all looks good on paper and for the paper.

Excellent program. Prison time well spent learning a job skill is movement in the right direction. Isn't GM production being held up by a minor supplier of transmissions shut down due to a UAW strike? Transmissions matter to the Post Office. They matter to GM. We need more programs like this.

Uh, the post office doesn't fix it's one transmissions. They contract it out, which is what this story is about. So even if they did hire ex-felons, they have no need for these mechanics. Who will hire them? Just about any transmission shop out there.

The only way you are going to end the cycle is to train these guys to do something productive when they get out. Would you rather they continue stealing what little you probable own when they get out?

Daily Horoscope for June 18

Taurus

No matter what else you're supposed to be doing today, it's a good idea to devote a little time to making sure your finances are running smoothly. You might even want to pay some bills now, rather than wait a couple of days until they're due, simply so you can make sure that you don't forget them. There should be some good news about a pay rise or perk, too.
