I don't live in Mt. Ida but I've visited family and friends there throughout my life. On a recent visit I happened to be in line in a convenience store when I heard a young man make some comments that amounted to veiled threats against an african american man who was being helped. I was incredibly offended and told the kid I would "kick his ass" if I heard anything like that out of him again. After he and the gentleman he insulted left I talked to the store clerk about the incident. She was embarrassed, i think, but just shrugged, smiled and said "well, this is Montgomery county after all." My question is, how widespread is this ignorant behavior in Mt. Ida? Is the population more racist than not? More racist than most? Is racism generally tolerated in Mt. Ida? I have friends and relatives who are black and I'm wondering how they would be received in Mt. Ida. Should I be worried?

well well well...not all who live in mt ida are racist, although I'm no saying I disagree b/c I find that the answer is YES the majority is racist...the majority is ignorant. As for letting killers free..I dont know anything about that..BUT I WOULDNT DOUBT IT seeing as how stupid most of the townsfolk are

The general population in Montgomery County is more racist than you would believe. If they are born and raised there, racist is how they raise the children. They need new blood in that gene pool.

1st you may be careful who you tell you're gonna kick their ass, unless you were talking to a 12 year old boy.
2nd, why not just stay away? You go there talking about racists who let killers off free. They don't need your few dollars.
How do you know the boy wasn't like you, just visiting there ?
Brenda, don't worry about new blood, cause in a few years ya'll can have a Salvadorean mayor just like Hatfield.
Rasism is in the eye of the beholder. Why don't you help your own nice cities get better, and let Mt Ida be?

Why is it only called racism in the white neighborhoods??? I've been in a black neighborhood and witnessed the same kind of flack from black folks. They are racist too. The only ignorance is people like you BRENDA from Glenwood thinking it's a one sided thing. I bet your butt wouldn't walk down the streets of a primarily black neighborhood would you?? I bet you clutch your purse when a group of black guys walk by you in the mall don't you??? That's ignorant racism too! So don't sit there and accuse one town and all the people in it of being racist. I have black friends and they say the same thing...it's on BOTH sides of the color spectrum. I'm soooooooooooooooooo tired of people crying racism racism white people are bad blah blah blah...stop playing the race card. And Martyoz...I just bet you told someone in a town of your so called racists you would kick their ass...they would've slapped you around like a toy poodle. So quit lying and flaming hate...you too are part of the problem. You're one of those people that think everyone from a small country town is racist and you probably call them all rednecks or hillbillies which is just as derogatory as calling someone the "N" word. It's always one sided with you so called peace makers but you never spew out your own actions. And you blaine...how do you know most of the townsfolk are stupid? Do you know every single person??? You too are part of the problem. You are JUST AS GUILTY as the said "racist" person in the store. Good grief. You people are self claimed advocates for peace yet you go around calling people that you don't even know stupid and racist and stereotype the whole dang town because of one persons actions. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

kudos jenjen, I just found this little forum and can only say that Mt Ida for all it's worth is home. There are a few "stupid" people around, more "ignorant" but mostly just people who mind their own business and don't go out of their way to be racist. Racism exists everywhere but its more likely evident in places like Mt Ida where it's rooted in the prejudices of the past. It Is my hope that most of us will outlive the racists and believe that we are all sharing this world.
