When we first started going to EI, we'd take I95to NC exit 132 and pick up NC58 all the way to EI. Be sure to watch for the right angle turns in Wilson and Kinston. Nowadays we take I95 to Exit 119A and go east on 258 (I think) for about 10 miles to NC58 south to Snow Hill, then take NC258 to 70. Turn left until you pick up 58 again. This avoids the 20 mph strech in downtown Kinston. Then take NC58 all the way in.

I think you may mean 264. That bypasses Wilson and intersects 58.
This looks like another possibility.
About how long does it take you with this route once you get off I95?

95-south to Exit 119A to Exit 43C putting you on I-795 (toward Goldsboro) Exit 87A to Kinston (stay right until you complete the loop onto 70E); then 70E to 58S to Emerald Isle. 70mph on 795! I-795 is a fairly new route about which a beach neighbor from Emporia told us. I believe it's longer but does save time.
