I am also proud of the mavs...but where has all the spirit gone? Starting from the community to the school district...The city and school officials need to get together and bring back the spirit to Pearsall. Win or lose we should support our kids in every activity they are in. I do not have any children in high school yet and I still attend pep rally's when I can and games. I have seen the school spirit disappear year after year. The pride of Pearsall needs to be brought back starting with the community and elected officials and professional staff at every campus. Pearsall needs help!!!

the spirit left when the school took away all the fun you can have while being at school. no one cares anymore, i look at the way they run the school now and its horrible. theres no spirit in the youth because the ambition isnt there like it used to be. back in the day school was exciting and now its like bootcamp in there, so until you can find a way to put the drive back in the youth then you can forget about spirit..

You know back when I was in school we had sooo much spirit it was ooozing out of the campus onto the city. I agree with you we have to talk to administrators and ask them to change some things for the sake of our future leaders. I think some of the kids have plenty of spirit they just can't show it and we need to start with the parents and we need fresh school board members that are actively involved in EVERY aspect of the school system not just sports...

Ladies on this post. You have my attention when talking about the school system. What has changed from way back when. I too remember the spirit when I was at Pearsall. I am wondering becuase I tell my kids stories of how great the it was to play football on a Friday night under the lights in Pearsall. How the whole town would come together and pull for our Mavericks. I have 3 boys, soon to be 4 boys come January that I plan on bringing back to play football in Texas because I want them to experience that atmosphere of playing and belonging to something bigger than them. That is the spirit of the whole town rooting you on. My oldest is only 11 but he weighs in at 130 pounds already. His younger brother is 7 and they both have already started playing football. All for one reason. To play high school football in Texas. My oldest already wants to move to Texas to play but I have 3 years left to retire before we return home. I plan on opening up a gym in Pearsall, mainly for teens to prepare for high school sports but open to any one. Please tell me that the spirit is still some what present because it would be a huge let down for my kids just to find out that the stories I have told them are no longer true.

It's not hard motivating the football players its the whole entire community. Sometimes you can only hear the crickets in the stands, and they are even louder than the cheerleaders. A lot has to do with the leadership that we have now (school board, mayor, etc...) I don't know what the answer is...but I am willing to try anything to help do my part. Can't wait for that gym we surely do need one.

I agree. That Maple guy has NO IDEA what he's doing with those guys. He needs to do something before his time is up. You're right mav09, he has alot of talet on the field but it seems as if he favors his some of his athletes... that won't get him anywhere...

WHAT THEY NEED TO DO IS STOP SPOTTING THE OPOSITE TEAM 20 POINTS IN THE 1ST HALF AND TRY TO COME BACK IN THE SECOND. AT LEAST THIS YEAR THEY DONT HANG THEIR HEADS DOWN LIKE THE LAST FEW YEARS. THIS YEAR THEY DON'T GIVE UP. THEY PLAY AN INTENSE GAME AND KEEP THEIR HEADS UP HIGH. A LITTLE TWEAKS HERE AND THERE WILL MAKE THINGS TOTALLY DIFFERENT. IT'S NOT ALL THE COACHES FAULT. THE PLAYERS NEED TO EXECUTE EVERY DOWN.

You talk about back in the day, back in the day we didn't have gang issues like they do now, we didn't have to worry about colors and what kinda shoes were gang affiliated with these wanna be gang bangers. So the school system had to do something about that, I have no trouble with my kids having to were uniforms to school at least you know what your buying evry school year, and I think it's cool that the kids can were different clothes on Fridays this year. As far as Coach Maple having the talent and not knowing how to use it, Coach Ortiz had one of the biggest and fastest running backs this school has ever had in Greg Gonzales but because they didn't get along he didn't let him play his senior year, that was three years ago. Coach Wilson had a similar problem with Jesse Hinojosa, when he finally put him in, more than midway through the season last year Jesse Made all district with like only five or six games played. Coach Maples number one running back is out for the season with a medical issue, his back ups are doing one hell of a job. So as far as having talent and not knowing how to use it, you have to look back and then ask that question. Hopefully this revolving door at he coaches office will stop for awhile so that the boys can at least learn a system and see it come full circle.

i know some people here dont know alot about football but for those that do this is the problem ive noticed with the team. so i was at the game friday and was watching the offensive and defensive formations. i like the offensive formations they use but the problem ive noticed is that the quarter back for pearsall seems to overthrow his receivers quite often. by the way this was the jourdanton game. maybe it was just a bad game for him or maybe he just cant find the range. also the offensive line needs to tighten up. there is too much space in between the guards. what i mean is the offensive line needs to tighten up to open the gaps for a run play. but where the main problem lies is here-- i overheard the offensive coordinator talking about how they would beat the maverick defense. he laughed and said "hey if they dont blitz i can do this all night" and laughed. if those of you that know football knows that blitzing is one of the most effective defensive strategies you can use and do you know how many times the mavericks have blitzed on defensed this season??? NONE!!! thats why your getting your 21-0 score in the first quarter. so after hearing this i needed confirmation so at halftime i talked to one of the assistant coaches for the pearsall mavericks and he said "nope we dont run blitz defense we just sit back and read the offense" and he then said "hey its not my call" and laughed.. i was like wow no one wonder we are in the pickle we are in now...in all of the games this year our team has ran no blitz plays on defense. basically if you dont run blitz plays on defense then you dont scare the other team.. so they beat us and we end up in a game where we have to catch up all the time.. go mavericks though!!!

The mid-seventies under Coach Boal, the mid-eighties under Coach Klett and that one year in the nineties under Hernandez...those days are gone and it is time for the Mavs to forge their own legacy this century. The plays, players and spirit have a little to do with it...the drive to win and excel have everthing to do with it. I'm going to attend this years homecoming and see for myself...good luck Mighty Mavericks!!

Hey Sci-Fi, someone from my era, some one who remembers Coach Boal, his off season workouts were a mother. But we did make it through, yes these boys need to burn their own trails, Nathan is a hell of a QB, he just needs to assert himself and let the team now he's the leader and they need to follow his lead. I think it will start to jell for them they just need to believe.

Hey....the MAVS did a great job tonight against Somerset!! 41 to 15! Go Mavs!! They were winning so they got a little cocky! Then we started getting all those "unsportman-like conduct" calls from the refs.! Mavs....you can be confident, just don't get cocky!

Again....great job tonight!!!

Sorry to burst your bubble...But the class of 88 were the State Champs in Band in 1988/89...The class of '87 is having their reunion this homecoming season.

Ha, ha. Win? The Mavs have not had a good season since Dr. Garza and Louisa started coaching the team
