He owns a million-dollar home, flies in two church-owned jets, has big-game animals mounted from safaris on his office walls and made nearly $1.2 million in salary and honoraria last year.

As a traditional-values candidate, Butler's personal and professional credentials are solid. He has been married for 30 years and has three grown children and heads a church that provides support and guidance to thousands of families. But as a high-profile chief executive officer of a mega church, Butler and Word of Faith have attracted critics, controversy and some legal fights.

Some national religious scholars, such as the Christian Research Institute's Hank Hanegraaff, say the Word of Faith movement -- a loose network of more than 300 independent churches -- is heretical and cult like.

Butler's lone challenger for the GOP nomination, Jerry Zandstra, who works for a Grand Rapids-area think tank and is a pastor in the Christian Reformed Church, has said he believes some conservative Christians will be uncomfortable with Butler's personal and religious style.

By his own description, Word of Faith serves "people who believe the scripture but don't want to answer to mainline denominations."

Outsiders most often associate Word of Faith with unapologetic promotion of the notion that God wants believers to prosper, including financially.

Butler says his critics distort the prosperity message -- financial wealth is the least important kind of prosperity, he says -- and its role in the church. He says he addresses it from the pulpit only a few times a year.

Anyone ever heard of Reverend Ike? He used to be on TV in the 1970's, with good Chirstian messages like: "The best thing you can do for the poor is not be one of them." My favorite Rev. Ike gimmick was a special powder he sold that supposedly would bring wealth if sprinkled over the unsuspecting believer's wallet. Well, according to Milmon Harrison, Associate Professor of African American and African Studies at the University of California-Davis, this con-man was one of the progenitors of Rev. Butler's Word of Faith Movement. Prof. Milmon published a book about the Word of Faith movment this year (that mentions Butler): "Righteous Riches" (Oxford University Press). U.S. Senator Keith Butler? Uh no...I really don't think so. And I suspect after Dawson's article, Dutch Reformed Pastor Jerry Zandstra is going to look better and better to the Republican rank-and-file. Problem is, Republican honchos from Ken Mehlman on down have been running here and there trumpeting Butler's praises. Not only are more people out of work, but many of those those low income folks who DO have jobs work for employers who can no longer afford to pay for health care. The state then picks up the slack. If the trends of the past hold true for 2006, more than 800,000 of those covered residents will be children, a 55-percent increase from 1999. To put that in perspective, there are about that many Michigan public school children, total, in kindergarten through sixth grade.

As the number of children on Medicaid has grown, so has the program's political constituency in the Legislature. The central fact of yet another cash-strapped state budget is that the delivery of health care as a government responsibility has bipartisan acceptance.

Do you think it is possible that all of you commenting on the Jackson Forum knows, but the Detroit New & FreePress or Southfield/Oakland County Media doesn't? You think no one called the local media to tell them the rumor??? Trust me they know and have checked the story throughly and found it to be false!!!! I have been a member of this church since 1981 --- a consistent member and I believe this story to be false! No one is taking up for the ministers when they do wrong. But they once prayed for us to be restored, delivered, healed etc....and they "M.U.S.T" carry all these peoples burdens and demons. And the church is not praying for them because most of the people in church is coming to get for themselves and love ones.
If the ministers are doing all the praying who's praying for them on a "DAILY BASIS"???????
Praying for YOUr Pastor is very important. They are serving God and the attacks of the enemy are non ceasing. They M.U.S.T be covered in prayer on a daily basis. And if your not going to pray for him/her dont judge them if YOU hear or see something thats outside their character.( 2 Cor.10:4) I tear down the stronghold over the pulpit.
