I just heard that a Social Worker was fired because she saw a child being slapped in the face by the father in Food Lion's parking lot and she called the police. She was told that she can't do her job when she is off from work. What kind of crap is that--it shouldn't matter who/where/when you are. If a child is being abused you need to call 911. Looks like the Dept of Social Services could be in a world of hurt over this one---if it is true. Has anyone heard about this?

I don't know ,but I was slapped when I ran a smart mouth as a kid.Guess what? I wasn't an annoying brat, who couldn't be taken out in public. On the other hand,if this parent was hitting and leaving marks; that could be a different story. in't anyone else se this?

You don't know the whole story. And what you do claim to know is wrong.

I have nothing against spanking--but slapping a child in the face is not right. We all say things that we shouldn't--does that mean someone should walk up and smack us in the face? Also--spanking--your hand, the child's bottom -I think that is one way of discipline. Child abuse is never right!!

I dont know anything about this, but I can tell you one thing, if I ever saw an adult slap a small child for any reason Id walk up to the man/woman and ask them how good are they at slapping people when they come a little bigger, just to see what they would do.

I'm not talking about slapping hard enought to leave a bruise.I'm mean the kind of slap we older folks got from our parents. That's not child abuse!Grown-ups do not discipline one another, that's just plain silly.Lack of old-fashioned discipline is why kids are running wild today!Glad I don't have to try to raise children today.Too much interference and not enough help.

There is NEVER a reason to slap a child in the face!!! That is abuse. God gave them a but to smack--not beat--to correct them.

We raised a daughter and son, and no matter what they did they were never smacked in the face. But they did get some spankings on the rear, like I did when I was growing up. Kids do need to be disciplined but not abused. Lots of kids are never corrected because their parents were "spooked by Spock" (The baby doctor, not the Star Trek guy) into believing that well disciplined children grow up less intelligent than those not spanked.(pure bullhocky). And I have no problem with school spankings, banning it was one of the biggest mistakes ever made in public schools..and thats just my 2 cents.

I agree with everything you said...as long as whoever is doing the spanking knows the difference in spanking and abuse. Mine were never smacked in the face either. That would never happen at my house.

Those workers have to take care of the truly needy but also have to put up with lazy folks with attitude that think the world owes them a living. I think they do a great job.

My husband I agree that the biggest mistake was taking discipline out of the school system, when I got in trouble at school I was in trouble at home, and when we tell our kids about it they are shocked when we laugh and say that was the good old days. Abuse no, just good discipline, we were never smacked in the face, but we did have the honor of picking our switch. lol

I have "popped" my child in the mouth when he was younger after he SPIT at another child. It wasn't hard at all, it left NO marks, but it was enough that he NEVER spit on anyone again! When I was a kid my parents "popped" me in the mouth, too. Once for back talking & once for cussing in front of our elderly neighbor. I survived, it DIDN'T kill me & it WASN'T abuse! My parents NEVER abused me, but they DAMN SURE didn't tolerate disrespect, lying, stealing, or cheating & they DEFINITELY didn't blame the teachers when I got myself into trouble! They held ME responsible for MY actions. I am sure I did PLENTY of bad things as a kid, but I GUARANTEE I ONLY DID it once & I got a well-deserved lesson in right & wrong! I am THANKFUL for getting a pop in the mouth a couple times, I damn sure needed it or my parents WOULDN'T have done it!! As long as you aren't using force, leaving marks, & hitting repeatedly over & over & over its NOT physical child abuse!

Worse whipping I ever got was around age 6 from my Dad for stealing penny candy (shows my age lol) at a store, got whipped with a belt and then had to apologize to the store clerk next day...I havent stole since!
