I highly doubt that a Portuguese Man Of War caused this. Most likely a sea nettle or sea wasp.

Just as a FYI...Portuguese Man of War stings are FATAL! This joker doesn't look dead.

I say we have MB vote to kick out the jellyfish.
|

did you read that the stupid guy that got stung said 'thats the way the ocean is. If you go in the ocean you must expect those things'. That almost sounds like if you live in a tourist town expect traffic and noise even in May. The MB mayor will just raise taxes and vote the jellyfish out. No problem.

The Sea Wasp is the deadliest. I thought it was found in Australian waters? |
||||
You're dead wrong on this one, chief. They can be if you go into anaphalactic (sp?) shock and don't receive immediate medical treatment. Been stung myself a few times. Bad stuff and it hurts like hell, but it's not a zombie typing this. |
||||
Yeah, I've never heard of box jellyfish in SC waters either. Bad little suckers. |
||||
|
the Aussie box jelly will kill you Mait. It's sting is doidly. I was in Oz last year, do not swim in the cypress swamp. Crocs and jellies!

I am not "Chief." P Man of War are found in the waters off the coast of Australia. Which for a nimrod brain like you ins NOT close to SC. Box jellyfish are everywhere. You sound like a "tick" the name I give to volunteer EMT type folks that think they know about medicine but actually bag groceries part time as a career. So go back to Kroger and recite "paper or plastic."

Oviously you have nothing better to do than argue with someone on the blog.
I was stung by a jellyfish many years ago, and whatever it was called was irrelevant....all I knew was that it hurt. The lifeguards treated it with baking soda and I survived. Like the dude said, it's all part of going to the beach and swimming in the ocean, which is a choice. All you people who want to be so much smarter than the next guy need to get a hobby! And I am sure that many will agree with me when I say this........If you don't like it at the beach, go back to where you came from! We locals will not miss you! |
||||
Yeah, i wish it was a sea nettle or sea wasp....too bad i actually watched as the man o war was pushed on top of me by a wave while i was surfing. |
||||
Just noise and traffic? Watch this!http://www.youtube.com/wa tch... |

I will try a second time to respond to several Comments because there is misunderstanding. First, the box jellyfish found on local beaches, particularly in NC, is Chiropsalmus quadrumanus, a different species than the one in Australia. I have been stung many times by it since I first found them beached on Sunset Beach on 8/12. I also have been stung twice by a Portuguese Man-o-War and am alive. Their stings are not fatal. The best antidote is vinegar. Very hot water also helps. If venom from a P. Man-o-War is on one's skin, it should be scraped off with a credit card or business card, or other flat object. Because individuals react differently, one person might have a mild reaction while another might need medical treatment. However, after having been stung multiple times within the past week and a half, I suspect that those feeling a sting from a box jellyfish while in the water will do fine. To see photos of both, go to www.okeefes.org . The box jellyfish link is on the top left. The Man-o-War link is at the bottom near the center.

this website explains all the different kinds of jelly fish in SC, their frequency, when they come around, and how bad their stings are. http://www.dnr.sc.gov/marine/pub/seascience/j...

Great site Okeefes. I wish you had a good pic of a sea nettle or sea wasp. 3 Years ago we were floating the Pawleys Island Creek, which we do all summer long, and I was walking in the creek, waist deep, and it felt like an electric, stinging, fish net wrapped around my leg from my thigh down to my ankle. Needless to say nothing of the jelly fish stuck since I proceded to walk on water at that point, haha. So I never say it. But the pain was bad and it got worse over the next couple hours. Had to go to a walk in clinic, who really did nothing for me. I dealt with pain for about 1 week and extreme itching for about a month and you could see marks for almost a year.
A BIG FYI- since the sting I have carried this stuff around called Sting Away and finally got to use it this past weekend. It's active ingredient is a digestive enzyme, papain, from the papaya and it works great. At least for small clear jellyfish "southern moon jelly" stings. Haven't had to use it for a big one yet. Lets hope the odds are in my favor and I won't be seeing another sting like the one 3 years ago again. By the way it was reported in the paper that week 3 years ago that several people were stung by sea wasps or nettles in the area. Any clue what you think it was? |
