No doubt it on the backs of taxpayers any way you cut it. Check out the latest pay scales with the overtime plan plus the overtime for court. I don't think most people in New York State are aware that almost all states outside several Northeast States use fully qualified Reserve Police Officers or Reserve Deputies ($1 per year salary) to handle duties like this and many other duties - saves the taxpayers a bundle.

Don't need troopers at all. They are a waste of tax-payer money. This would save the tax-payer hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars! I don't think I will be paying taxes any more. To much waste and taxes are to high.

The ignorant and ill-informed should refrain from commenting on news stories unless they take the time to find out the facts:
None of the troopers are earning overtime for being at the Fair, they work their regular schedule. Overtime is not authorized, even for travel.
The troopers assigned to the Fair are School Resource Officers (and there is no school in August), so no other troopers are making overtime to cover for them while they are at the Fair
And to Dan from Alden...... for your information there is a LARGE portion of New York State, including towns and villages where the NY State Police are the ONLY law enforcement that patrols the area. Even here in Western NY. They are invaluable when it comes to providing protection, assistance and all other police services to the residents of New York. If you would like to live in a town where these services aren't provided, and you have to fend for yourself, then by all means, leave New York and try to find a place where there is no law enforcement or where police protection is provided for free, by volunteers. I'm sure you and your family will feel safe.

I agree, NYS Troopers are really a waste, the only thing they seem to be good for is writing speeding tickets. The local police are well equipped and can handle it alone.

I agree with Citizen. You get what you pay for and I for one prefer to have a well trained, professional police agency available to me and my family when, god forbid, we may need their help. Do you realize how little of our tax money, in the overall picture, actually go towards the budget for the police?

More than likely you are a NYS Police Officer as well. I was an academy-certified Reserve Deputy in another state and I feel perfectly safe knowing that volunteers (who are academy-certified) are out on patrol....because because they want to be on patrol, not because they are being paid to do so. By your statement, our volunteer firefighters are not as good as paid firefighters...and we all know that is not the case. There have never been enough reserve and auxiliary officers to replace full-time officers and I doubt there ever will be. But your statement just raises fear in people so they will pay for what they don't know. If reserve officers meet the same qualifications and go through the same or equivalent training there is no basis for your claim and you know it. I know the the game that is/has been played here and it is costing everyone.

The troopers have to do something now that their dirty tricks detail and Spitzer prostitute hiding money is gone. Maybe they are fund raising for the top criminal trooper Preston $20000 Felton. HA HA. Jumped up meter maids who shoot their own.

I'm well aware of the academy training and in-service training. You and I both know training is important, but it is the officers intelligence and ability that keeps him and the citizens safe. What if the training is the same AS IT IS in most states? Well I think you were a "wannabe", when you wanted to be a police officer and then apparently became one. Ego and money have already cost enough lives, right here in WNY. I never heard the term wannabe when a Reserve Officer was injured or killed or was backing up a full-timer who was working alone

Sometimes you never know where you're going to make a difference in someone's life. The demonstrations might inspire a little kid to work hard, study and stay fit enough to be just like a trooper he saw at the Fair. I'm grateful to all who serve and protect us. Thank you!
