We shouldn't blame the sharks. On the other hand, tourism is a major source of revenue for South Carolina. But then again we are invading their home. It's a tough decision and we need to have more discussion on the relationship between aquatic life, specifically sharks, and human beings.

Before anyone reads this post, i am in no way blaming the victim of this incident. My deepest regards and sympathy go to this unfortunate individual. But there are some harsh feeling that citizen threw out to fisherman as a group, so, i'm going to throw them right back, representing a group. First of all, Citizen, you state that there are places that "stupidly" allow fishing from the beach, just a few yards from swimmers. That guy fishing just a few yards away, he is not causing any attraction for sharks. Most likely, he is never going to hook into a shark because of all the activity of the swimmers; they aren't exactly the biggest fan of humans. Unless he is throwing out a burlap sack full of fish guts and blood, and then tossing a 10 lbs. tuna head in after it, he is causing absolutely no harm. Secondly, its summertime. The waters warm, small fish get drawn into the shallows, big fish follow and bigger fish follow them; its a completely natural occurrance, it happens every year, all over the world. Thirdly, the sharks you have seen, probably less than 5 ft., like the one in the article, are NOT the ones you need to worry yourself over. Also, as someone i saw mentioned, you are entering their environment. The ocean does not belong to you, it belongs to them. That is a risk many people unknowingly make every time they stop in even knee deep water. The article says that people said they had no idea sharks that "big" would come into such shallow water. The sharks are there; they are ALWAYS there, you just can't see them. I'm not trying to cause any tension, or ruffle anyones feathers, but it's the total lack of knowledge and ignorance on this subject that really fire me up.

And the most dangerous shark to us, in terms of how common they are and such, i believe would be the Bull Shark. If you think you are safe in the river, think again with these guys. They have been spotted as far inland on the Mississippi River as St. Louis!! You do the distance math.

The black shark usually doesn't work, and is generally pretty lazy. The black shark likes to steal from it's neighbors. The black shark likes affirmitive action & usually votes democratic.

Yes, we are visitors to thier world.
I'm sorry, all these people saying that they avoid the ocean because of sharks. In over 10 years of diving the Caribbean and Hawaii (where I now work), the only sharks I have ever seen have been a couple of nurse sharks and reef sharks without baiting them to come out (like on a shark dive that I have done in the Caribbean). If you're intelligent, you would realize that sharks like dark areas like under piers and murky waters. And they feed at dusk and dawn. They say shark attacks are 1 in a 11 million... I feel bad for anyone that lets these odds ruin a chance to explore the last unexplored region of our earth: the oceans... |
