Potential move to Pass Christian MS

My husband and I are 50 and 52 and are looking to relocate our lives to a southern climate. Having made several trips to Texas this winter to take care of my mother, we traveled through Mississippi and I felt like I wanted to explore the area a bit more. Unfortunately, time was not on our side and the trips through were fast and furious. There are several things that attract me to Pass Christian and I would like some real advice about the area. My husband was trained in the vending business but lost his job in the winter due to a company take-over. He is working construction right now and is very very good at this type of work. I run an antique shop and prior to that I worked for a lawyer for 10 years until he became ill and passed away.

I am interested in knowing the following:

Are there jobs available in the area that would pay enough to support us in the area?

Is there lakes/bays or water areas that we could put our 18 foot boat in for recreation. We love being on the water in our boat, fishing, tubing, sunning, etc.

Is Pass Christian looking at re-growing after Katrina or are there signs that people are not coming back to the area?

It is my understanding that Mississippi has de-criminalized marijuana to a certain extent and being a smoker, I am concerned about whether it is something I can do in my own home and not fear arrest. Also, can you grow for personal use without fear of the local law enforcement coming to visit.

I would appreciate any and all comments - the good - the bad- the ugly.

The Pass (as we call it), still has a long way to go. Basically, the whole town was underwater. It will be a good five years before the infastructure will catch up. Insurance rate are through the roof now. They will still bust you for smoking weed in public and cultivation. If you have a small grow operation for personnal use and keep it hidden,(hydrophonic), no problems...smoke at home.

You should look toward NW Florida,(Destin, Santa Rosa), even Alabama,(Gulf Shores, Orange Beach).

We on the Coast are still traumatized and hate to say it,(not as progressive as the areas noted above).

Plenty of jobs for a "handy man", but Casino's have seen a slight decline in revenue and are quietly laying people off. Beau Rivage just went through this. Note, Attorney General is cracking down on non-license GC's.

If you're trying to relocate for warmer climate go to Florida. We don't want any type of crime in The Pass, and smoking what you're speaking of IS a crime. We are proud of our community and don't need you anywhere on the MS Gulf Coast.

Stay away from the MS Gulf Coast if you dabble in ANY sort of illegal activity---especially The Pass! We are trying to rebuild, slowly but surely. The construction industry does regular drug testing (who wants to be sued by a worker high on something illegal). Antique shops are plentiful and the law community small and close. Maybe an e-mail to our Attorney General, Jim Hood, would help you?
