Way to go, Wildcat girls! Try to enjoy your "victory," even though you know you didn't actually win the meet. Be sure to give your coaches a big thank-you for grabbing the title out of the hands of the real winners and handing it to you. It must feel great! Speaking of coaches, I was especially impressed with the one who, when a South Pasadena boy suggested to him on the field that the victory might seem a wee bit hollow, started screaming at the kid that he had a Ph.D. and was "more successful than you'll ever be in your life!" Now THAT'S professionalism in action! All in all, an impressive performance, Monrovia!.

You mention that Monrovia dropped most of its varsity boys to frosh-soph to try to win that title, since they knew they couldn't win varsity. What you left out was that Monrovia varsity boys couldn't win the frosh-soph title either.

Monrovia should be SSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO proud of their coaching staff. Way to teach your team sportsmanship and grace. Obviously the better team was stripped of the title. Sounds like they were all taught by the Arcadia Soccer coaches how to "Win at any cost"......

This is a National Federation and CIF rule. Applied to a friendship bracelet is really too bad, as the rule is designed to prevent injuries or kids running wearing gold chains etc. But as Coach Hernandez pointed out, the rule is nothing new and is always in effect. This is a rule that all athletes are aware of and must comply with at all CIF meets. High school kids can be forgetful, so someone (coach, teammates, parents) needed to tell everyone to double check for any jewelry. Would have been better if Monrovia had just left it alone, but it was the job of the meet officials to DQ the girl whether or not anyone complained.

The fact that Monrovia has to stoop this low to steal the victory from south pas is despicable. Infractions were committed earlier in the meet by Monrovia athletes that starters and coaches alike let slide. To name one, D.J. Jones false started and should have been DQd during the 200M but the official let it slide. Yes, it did not make a difference in the end because it was in the boy's varsity division but it shows that Monrovia is trying to play both sides of the rules and getting away with it. But you know what? Be happy Monrovia girls, be happy that you snatched the league title out of the hands of the better and more deserving team. And to the coaches, you should be ashamed of yourselves for resorting to winning like this. You are making a mockery of the sport by hiding behind a petty rule such as this one. Yes rules may be rules but you exploited it into an unfair ruling in your favor. League titles should be awarded to the team that exhibits class and honor in their wins. Not little children who run home and pout when they don't get their way.

Amen to that! As a parent I would feel ashamed that my kid won that way. What a tarnished victory.

Yes, "to bad" (the word is "too," by the way), we shouldn't pout when we "lose fair and square." That's why, when you've lost fair and square, you don't claim that you really won based on a technicality that didn't affect the outcome of the meet in any way. There was nothing unfair about the way the South Pasadena girls won--they ran the fastest and they jumped the highest, and the Monrovia girls and coaches know it.

And sorry, but no matter how rude the South Pasadena kid may have been, the Monrovia coach is an adult and should have behaved like one. Screaming "I'm more successful than you'll ever be" at a teenager is just pathetic behavior, especially from a high school coach.

As a parent I would take my kid by the ear if she EVER spoke to an adult, much less a coach, the way the So. Pas kid spoke to that coach. If you are going to be ashamed about something that would be a great place to start. Anyone and everyone knows darn good and well if the shoe was on the other foot So. Pas. would have done the EXACT same thing. Didn't a Monrovia girl get disqualified in the long jump for wearing jewelery. Why is that ok but it's not ok for So. Pas.? It's the same mentality that says its ok to drive to fast as long as you have somewhere to go and your late. As far as the boys race there was no Monrovia coach there, if the official let its slide that is on the official and he should be taken to task for it no question. If you want to talk about class and honor lets talk about the So. Pas coach who starting lieing that the bracelet was a religious piece of jewelry. The volume that the coach used to reply to the boy is in question and totally depends on who you talk to but if he yelled two wrongs dont make a right but lieing is lieing under anyone's interpretation. If you want to talk about little children point the finger everywhere it belongs, if it belongs to the Monrovia coach it belongs to the So Pas Coach too, and also the So Pas boy(s) who said anything to the Monrovia coach, as well as the coach if he was truly yelling. Monrovia played by the rules and didnt pick and choose which rules they wanted to play by. Lets all use this chance to act like adults and teach all the kids about sportsmanship and playing by the rules instead of pouting when they lost fair and square. Congrats to both teams for a incredible season and one of the best meets I've seen in a long time. The members of both teams have reason to be very proud and I hope that So Pas hasn't spent so much time trying to come up with reasons they shouldn't have lost when in fact they did that they forget all the hard work they put in to get there. If this rule is such an issue lets change the rule and go out next season with everyone on every team playing but the exact same set of rules and teach our kids that sportsmanship doesn't depend on a win or a loss. The Monrovia Girls Varsity team is to be commended as the winners of the Rio Hondo League. You earned every point you got and dont ever let the sour grapes of the childish tell you different!!!! I will guarantee if Monrovia lost due to an infraction of a rule the So. Pas. "adults" would tell their team the EXACT same thing!!!
What did the kid say exactly?

Coach Knowles sure taught his team a valuable lesson, that some people will take every advantage to win. How sad that he would use that so his team could win. A rule is a rule but it's not the Olympics, it's High School Track and Field. It's still about the girls first. You may have won, but you're a loser.

To Concerned Citizen: If I heard him right, the kid walked up to two Monrovia coaches and asked them, "Do you feel like winners right now?" One of them kind of shook his head as if to show that he sympathized with the kid's disappointment and anger but wasn't going to engage any further (the mature, adult response).

The other one replied that yes, he did feel like a winner. The kid responded with something like "Really? What a man!" (immature, teenage-kid response), and that's when the second coach lost it and embarrassed himself and Monrovia High School. Kids will behave like kids, but adults should resist the temptation to respond in kind.

How's that win feel? This goes out to the Monrovia coaches, exactly what lesson are you trying to teach your athletes?
We all obviously know who the true winner's should have had been, and would have had been on Thursday evening after the meet. The lack of sportsmanship itself was more than enough to lose all respect for Monrovia's coaches and team. As an athlete myself on the team, I say this on behalf of all the future seniors, juniors, sophomores, and incoming freshmen: next year Monrovia. Bring it.

Guess you're missing the part where Monrovia was high jumping with hats on, false starting in the 200, wearing hair ribbons in the relays, and blatantly cutting off South Pas runners in the mile. All without getting DQed.

Also, just thought everyone should know: the South Pas kid who will, apparently, never be as successful as the Monrovia coach, is the former Youth Governor of California.

The real winner here -- besides Robin Laird -- is the South Pas young man who engaged the Monrovia coaches in a discussion about their "victory." I witnessed the exchange and am proud of the way this student spoke with the coaches. We should encourage such dialogue. Maybe, just maybe, encounters like this one could alleviate some of the graver injustices in the world. Silence, complacency and conformity will not. The demand for justice must start somewhere, and why not at a high school track meet? This is public education at its best!

My kids ran track when they were in high school, and I like watching the tail end of meets while I wait to work out on the South Pas track. When it was time for the girls' 4x400 relay and the announcer said Monrovia had 63 points and only needed 64 to win, I was excited to see what could have been the deciding race. When I saw that Monrovia girl run by with ribbons fluttering in her hair, I wondered about it, because ribbons and hair clips were against the rules when my kids ran. Monrovia ended up losing that race, but I wonder how they'd have felt if they'd won the race and the title, only to have South Pas claim the win based on a hair ribbon. I'd have been ashamed of South Pas for winning that way. Monrovia High School administrators, parents and supporters should tell their coaches to behave honorably and give up their bogus claim to this title. Monrovia has some legitimately excellent athletes in many sports, including girls' track, but a "win" like this just cheapens their program.

I think we can all agree that Monrovia did not legitimately win.

It was the Monrovia coaching staff that made the decision to exploit a frivolous rule in order to steal the victory from the team that earned the title - South Pasadena.

Monrovia did not "win" because they were a better team; they "won" because they were willing to sacrifice their integrity.
