Rosebud Sioux Tribe declares state of emergency on reservation suicides

Full story: Rapid City Journal

It's clear that there are other agencies outside of just the tribal programs that have a great interest and a great role in helping us address this issue. Gang violence and teen suicide on Rosebud Reservation recently captured the attention of state and national media. via Rapid City Journal

all the youngsters need to grow up before they get themselves in some real trouble. they need to stop hating and realize what they are doing to their families, their mothers, sisters, grand parents, and every one who loves them. I left the rez and grew up, and so should all of the youth in rosebud. Its alot better now that im not in a jail cell every weekend.

Why would any one wanna play with death?
My cuzin attempted suicide twice and now he can't even think or do anything for himself.
Like this person said "Grow up".

I live in Rosebud South Dakota and as i read your comments you dont seem to understand. i am a statistic too, but that isnt the point. living on the reservation is way different then living in the city, you know everyone, your related to almost eveybody, and you alwayz have a good friend. the girl just 1 month shy of her 14th birthday is my cuz'n and she was the happiest girl any one could meet! she was alwayz smileling you would never expect her to do such a thing! and well she did it. i cant really explain whatz going on in my rez but i can say that itz nobodyz place to judge you would have to live it to understand.....

I was born in Valentine and i know some about whats going on there on the reservation. Alcohol is the biggest factor. The only way to fight that is to NOT take the first drink.

Hello,
My name is Chayo Torres KIUKANPI. I am married to Donroy Makes Room For Them from Mission, SD. We currently live on the Pine Ridge Reservation. I am from the Kiowa/Choctaw/Cheyenne/Arapaho /Commanche Nations.
I am currently working on a building a 24-hour teen center. This takes a lot of work, but I am hoping this will be built by 2010. It is always hard for each individual to live on the reservation. Many times, we as family members may not know what may be going on in someone's life. I had a brother-in-law who passed away in 2005. His name was Olowah Makes Room For Them. We as a family never knew what happened to him or what was going on, but I have devoted my life to helping teens to help themselves. If anyone would like to help with any ideas or support for the 24-hour teen center, you may contact me at torreschayo@hotmail.com. Life is an honor and you all come from a rich culture and proud people. Hold your heads up high.

People really do not understand the toll that suicide takes not only on your family, but your community. Clay Wilson, my brother, committed suicide in January. Living with the pain and the emptiness is almost too much to handle. If you have problems you need to talk to SOMEONE, anyone. Everyone can blame it on something or someone, but a lot of it is self control. Drugs and alcohol are not a LAKOTA tradition. Don't underestimate yourself by giving in to lifes struggles. Human beings are amazing creatures. Live your life, things are hard now, but it WILL get better. Once you've hit rock bottom, there isnt any place to go but up.
No doubt, the res isnt the best place to live. But instead of focusing on all of the negative, people should blog about good things that happen. Alcohol, drugs, violence.. it seems as if thats all the lakota people represent. Although all of these have related to the suicides in SOME WAY, you shouldnt dwell in self pitty. You know its a problem, CHANGE IT!!
Dont be another statistic. People love and care about you. Dont waste the creators gift of life to you, by using selfish excuses as the way out of a temporary problem.
Rest In Peace
Clay Kip Wilson.

I'm from Mission..grew up there, went through a lot of shyt that I don't want to talk or even fckn think about. But, I got off the rez. All the other ppl I saw commenting here got off the rez too. Its like they're all running away. What the F**k. I got off not by choice, & I go back to visit a lot cuz I miss it. But ya see, thatz the difference between everyone who has commented and me -
[I'm going back.] My people need help and I'll go through hell again if it means I can help them. I'm not running away from them. What the fck has happenend to us? Our ancestors wouldn't want us to split up and f**ckn leave each other to die. F*ck you all. You SAY you care, well what the fck are you doin? Nothing! You're running away like lil bitchez.
Ya know what? Just keep away then. Don't come back. We don't need you. Nativez need other Nativez who CARE ENOUGH TO ACT. You're all just like another native tryin to be white. You're watching from a distance feeling pity for us, like you AREN'T one of us. F*ck that! We dont want your f**kn pity.

Words are useless unless you have actions to back them up.
Think about it.

Along with what I just posted, everybody is trynna lock us up or send us away I'm doin' 5 years in juvenile corrections ain't no way out. Were all strugglin', over my adolesent years I've lost so many frenz, family, n peers, it ain't cool. Nobody knows what to do so they either lock us up or send us away. Theres more to it than just that. I still live in Rosebud but for the moment I'm incarcerated till 2013.... death ain't no joke.

i see and feel the pain of our sicangu youth with each suicide. most of our young people don't understand we have nearly one million acres of land(minus unsettled treaty claims)that is capable of supporting us economically. the problem is, approximately 100 subsidized sub-leaser families are the only ones getting all the money from leasing our lands, water and air, which rightfully belongs to us all. this treaty and human rights violating and genocidal federal sublease policy is responsible for todd and shannon being among the poorest counties in the nation because we have no treaty based economy. the subsidized sub-leasers are responsible for the poverty and high suicide rate of our youth tired of living in poverty with no money to do anything. they have the blood of our people on their hands but publically defend treaty rights in the media. they should be banished and disenrolled for tiwicakte or murder.

Daily Horoscope for December 25

Aries

You've got a taste for adventure today, so you might decide to depart from tradition in some way and make it an unusual Christmas. You're certainly all set for a great time, and you'll want everyone else to enjoy themselves as much as possible. You'll probably eat and drink too much but, hey, it's Christmas! Isn't such excess par for the course?
