MR. Boks fails to advise people, or put signs in the shelters, that the animals turned face a high likelihood of being put to death. He is obligated, according to the LAAS Commission, to post such signs.
And not everyone agrees about Mr. Boks' assertion. Ed Muzika's blog says otherwise:

Housing market crash takes toll on family pets
Article Last Updated: 05/16/2008 11:21:25 PM PDT It's sad enough when a family must lose its home during a soaring number of national bank foreclosures.

The people abandoning them or turning them in should be euthanized.
It's not the animals fault they have selfish owners who could't give a chit about them. So now because of the selfish pathetic owners the pets face a death sentence. It is sad how the world is becoming a "Throwaway Society". |

It is sad to see that people would abandon a family member like this. What kind of examples are they showing thier kids. If they have a problem just abandon it, can't wait until thier kids grow up and forget about them in the old age home.

When people have to rent and its hard to find a rental that excepts pets, people MUST put their family first. I know I would. Thank God Im not in that position, but if I was, I know what I'd have to do. I agree its very sad, however, I dont believe its their first choice to do that.

What about taking time to find them a home instead of leaving them behind to satre or get hit by a car. There are many no kill shelters. People who leave animals behind to fend for themselves are selfish and wrong. |

i totally agree with you! Leaving pets behind to fend for themselves is horrible! Find the pet a home, or at least take it to a shelter. |

You know what is sad is that these poor little guys are so loyal that they stay at the home for along time waiting for the owner. They deserve better than this for thier years of unconditiona love and loyalty. |

It's illegal to abandon an animal, $5,000 fine, up to six months in jail. Of course if someone just lost their home, who would want to fine them.

Maybe if they did fine them, the leaving behind of these guys would stop. If they can't pay the fine they should do community service. Thanks for the info.

Most of the foreclosed property is in LA County, not LA City. The average loan value of foreclosed properties here is 370K. Properties are selling for 28% less than their loan values. The average price of an LA City home is 500K. Foreclosures are happening mainly in the poor parts of town. These homes aren't sitting vacant in the City. They are being purchased by ex-renters. One animal home is lost but another is found.
