The bypass will begin west of the city on hwy 412 by crowleys ridge college and travel southeast of the city coming more directly east around gateway tire on hwy 49 crossing east past highways 69 and 135 and then coming back northeast to rejoin hwy 412 by about the old lakeside school building.

That was the last proposed route that I have seen and to my knowledge this is the one that will be built.

with the new GCT high school being built on highway 49 south, this bypass will be a necessity.

I thought there were 4 different plans being considered for the by pass. Three southern routes and one northern route.

There are, or at least there were. A northern route would be completely asinine. But then our highway department is notorous for making foolish decisions and doing stupid things, at least 3 times, before they finally get it right.

CASE IN POINT: 49 & 412 intersection. They've redone it FOUR times and it still isn't right and will never be until they relocate a few cemettery plots and make a sweeping turn from 49 to the east on 412 like they did in front of Wallgreens.
another CASE IN POINT: They widened 412, knowing full well that it needed to be 5 lanes. But they chose to go the cheaper route, making it 4 nice wide lanes. THEN they realized their screwup, came back and restriped it, making 5 narrow lanes that semis have trouble staying between the lines on.

With the new GCT school going in on highway 49 south, just plain old everday American redneck common sense would tell you the bypass needs to be near the school, since a majority of students will be driving in from the east or the west.

The idea of a by-pass is to quickly move traffic around a city not be a quick way to get to school.

By-passes with higher speeds and schools are not a good mix.

I suspect that if your theory hold's true we can expect the bypass to go North then..

DUH!!!!! but bypasses do have EXITS, do they not?? Thus you have a quick way to get to school, avoid heavy downtown traffic, LESSEN downtown traffic and thereby lessen downtown accidents. Personally I think bypasses and schools ARE compatable. Check out Brookland.

I'm sorry. I forget that small towns consider that a by-pass.

I was thinking of larger cities where you have by-passes with limited access and no traffic lights.

As soon as they put in another light or two the Brookland by-pass will not be of much help.

I doubt any of our opinions make much headway but the stop lights by Brookland are a nuiance! What good is a by pass with lights to slow traffic.
I hope a by pass around Paragould will be a by pass minus the lights :)
Most of our traffic congestion seems to be down 49 and 412 so I can't see the northern route will help that much anyway.

I tried to find the latest plans on the Ark Highway and Transportation website, but it has nothing that I could find, and everytime I tried to do a search for 412 Paragould the website crashed.

I'll keep researching though.

DREAM ON, my friend! Highway 49 north, from McDonald's all the way to Glen Sain Ford, used to be THE bypass around Paragould. Before it was built, highway 49 was actually state highway 1 and it went smack dab through the middle of town. Still does, called 49B. Now? We need a new bypass to bypass the bypass. It happens every time. Brookland is a good example. Stadium Boulevard is an EXCELLENT example. Several years ago, it was a bypass to bypass Caraway road. The highway department can't keep up because THEY DON'T BUILD THE DAMN THINGS RIGHT!! If they'd build a TRUE BYPASS, with controlled exit and entry ramps, and service roads running alongside, then it would be a bypass and would STAY a bypass. Don't hold your breath.

Lakeside school? Do you mean the old South Tech school?

Just my opinion, I think a bypass should be built south of Paragould BUT further south closer to the 69/49 intersection. I think a bypass should be outside the city limits or it will be just like the bypass on 49 north. It will be so congested anywhere closer to the GCT school being built.

No, I mean the old lakeside school. Of course it hasn't been the old lakeside school for many years now.

There are quite a few schools directly near exit ramps in Memphis and it works just fine. It's not that big of a deal.
