Penny Pinchers on gas prices like me end up saving in the end, so I'm still going to ARCO.

I don't know what you are worried about try paying $7.00 a gallon like we do over here and you will know what its like to be getting RIPPED of by fuel companies and your own government

If gas is gas why then does the article not mention why ARCO stations can sell their gas cheaper than other stations?

In re-reading the article it only states that the reason ARCO can sell their gas cheaper is because of their no-credit card policy. If this were the only reason I can't believe the other stations wouldn't offer a cash only price to stay competitve. Something doesn't seem right.

I work for a refinery and all gas is made the same, as per California standards. The only difference is the additive the company put in.

Thanks for verifying what I suspected. You can buy additives at Big Lots on the cheap and add them yourself, too. In the end it will still be cheaper than buying at most other gas stations.

I've had nothing but problems with my old cars, and my new ones when I've run Arco gas. It's not worth it.

Penny-pincher? I think not. A couple of weeks ago I drove up to my usual Mobil stop, looked at the obscene prices, thought about the even more obscene profits posted by Exxon-Mobil, and got back in the car and drove to ARCO. I should have been doing this long ago. So should everyone else. Stop supporting companies that go beyond good business, and gouge us to dollar death.
Next time YOU pull up to your local Mobil, stop and think about the ridiculous prices you are paying, and find a good station that charges less. Get back in your car, honk the horn, and drive away! Forget "customer" service. Unless you are over 45 those days are long gone and just a memory anyway.
"Can I check your oil and water today?" That disappeared with "Leave it to Beaver!"

The other chains have to take credit cards because they issue their own gas cards, where they make money charging interest and fees.

Costco has the same or cheaper prices (a penny or so) than Arco and you can use your Costco Amex if you have it, otherwise you need to use a debit card.

Use a Cash Back credit card (discovercard, citicard) because most pay 5% for fuel purchases. $4 per gallon * 5% = 20 cents. You dont need to go to Arco and worry about the ATM purchase fee then. You will mostlikely break even, and could even beat the Arco price. Bahh, all gas is the same anyway.

A friend told me that the ARCO gas is "Watered Down". I don't believe her, is there any proof they do that?

No there is proof they don't do that. Try watering down your gas and see how many blocks your car goes!!! Arco is the same gas everyone else sells. Look around the Southbay. Are their any special Arco refineries? Nope, because all the gas comes from the same places.

In the end, with my Discover Gas card I get 5% back on all gas purchases, so I save over 20 cents a gallon going to a gas station that takes credit cards.

your friend is wrong all gas is the same it comes from the same pipe. if it was watered down it would not only not meet the octane rating but people would complain about blown engines. pistons cannot compress water.

Why is such a derogatory headline necessary though? Do the dailybreeze.com thought police now want to branch in to where you shop and Arco does not meet their standards? Where does it end with these people anyway?

My mechanic has said to me that ARCO's alcohol level is higher, thus it burns hotter. That's why it has the rep of damaging engines. He recommends I don't use it. I ignore him.

I thought about it though and came to the realization that pistons can compress water but what the engine can't do is ignite the water causing one piston to expand and another to compress, turning the crankshaft, etc. which eventually ends up turning the wheels of the car anyway.
