With the experience and education you possess, you should kiss the County's backside for employeeing you. In the past hardwork, experience and loyalty to a company meant something. In this age if you don't have a college degree you aren't worth anything?? No one at GD or other nursing homes that I am aware of argue about the benefits of the facility, however we have earned them with our years of service and our income has actually gone down with co-pays to health insurance, also we would accept small annual raises to keep our insurance the same. The complaint of most employees is they would like more help which is not unreasonable when you look at the aide to patient ratio. Less employees would be injured on the job and the frustration of employee and resident would be cut down. If employees are cared about, respected and concerns addressed it cuts down on frustration and absenteeism. And just because you have anything above a high school diploma doesn't mean you are worth what you are paid, some people think just because they go to college they are owed a big pay check to sit on their butts and look down on the workers who actually break a sweat.

Yea, that may sound great to you, but there are alot of us that are fresh out of high school working part-time with no benefits, to go to college and earn a degree for a better job. And if you dont work there you have no clue whats its like to try to call off when you are actualy sick. Ever wonder why so many residents have pneumonia, there immune systems are weak and we are expected to come in even when were sick, because otherwise they will be short on workers that day. And if you dont come in you will get disciplinary actions taken against you. If you think that we are complaining maybe you should work there for one day, You'll be pulling your hair out an hour into the shift.

At one point in time I myself was an aide at Gracedale. I new Jim and he provided the upmost care to the residents. What had happened was an accident. I don't foresee Jim hurting any of those residents intentionally. He was a good worker and he met the needs of those residents in a respectable manner. What the problem is the administration that sit in thier offices all day and have no clue what goes on, on the units. Something happens right away it is abuse and the cops are called and people are hauled off in handcuffs. It dosen't matter if it is an accident. What it comes down to is that pretty soon there is no one going to be there to take of the elderly in the LTC facilities due to the simple fact of what is going on. People are going to be afraid to even work in such an inistution due to being afraid of loosing their jobs. I see it every time something happens, workimg there now. An accident occurs and the first words out of their mouth are "Am I going to loose my job, it was an accident." How would you like to go to work everyday with the fear of loosing your job? Accidents happen and like I said Jim would never do anything to harm a resident. He was a wonderful worker.

I, also have worked in group homes for the disabled, both mentally and physically, as well as the elderly. I agree 100% that there is a vast and divisive space between administrators and workers. There are those who sit in an office going over numbers and those clean up poop. Complaining about this space accomplishes nothing but more negative attitudes and feelings of worthlessness among staff. In this world of rising healthcare costs, wouldn't it make sense (especially w/ county money) to establish a meaningful dialouge that was more about solutions than complaints? I can almost guarantee it would be not only more cost effective, but additionally allow everyone involved to feel more invested in what they do everyday.
