CHP Warns Public On Clogging 911 Lines

“I'm looking for International Airport.”

People usually call 911 for emergency help. What if it's the emergency response system itself that needs the help? An NBC investigation has shown that California 's 911 lines are getting bogged down with crank ... via KNBC Los Angeles Channel 4

Seriously, people? Is this how you want to spend your tax dollars? Once again... we are supporting a system which could one day help us, but instead it's being abused by morons!

the penalties are way too low! make them fit the stupidity of the caller:airport directions $100, lost and found $200, information $300. if they argue about the fine, double it.
all callers to be brought before the city council, their call played, and after the laughing has died down they are to explain how their call was an emergency.

I was on the 55 Fwy in Santa Ana once, there was a man running across traffic on the Freeway, I called 9-1-1- and was on hold for at least 3 minutes, so I hung up.

And these numbskulls also make the dispatchers angry. My husband called 9-1-1 on his cell phone when we witnessed a man hit by a car on the surface street. Dispatcher was angry because we had not called the police directly. Who carries the local police line number in there cell phone contact list. The sins of these stupid individuals are then paid by us all.

No Sir it is not. I call and report reckless (possibly drunk drivers) and I’d appreciate it if you do the same
Please Make the Call

The dispatchers should just disconnect the call as soon as its found to be a prank or non-emergency. Prank calls are traceable. $1000 fine for the FIRST offense. Second offense...fined $5000 AND arrested and 6 months in jail. Third offense (which I doubt it would happen, but...) $10,000 fine AND 3 yrs. in lock-up. Bet that would break 'em of the prank calls. We have to have tougher, much tougher laws to curb this problem.

My 14 year old daughter had to call 911 5 times to get through to have an ambulance send for her grandmother who had a stroke
5 wasted minutes
and a simple question from a young kid
"how can this not work?"

Amazing, there are signs on the Freeway soliciting people to call 911 if they see this, that or the other thing. Even aggressive driving. Now, they are telling people they are getting too many calls? Yah, no kidding, dah?

I don't think that they're having a problem with legitimate "Emergency" calls.

But, when someone calls looking for directions to the airport or who to report a lost/stolen cell phone to. I think that's the issue.

Yes, they do, I have been driving down the freeway and called and watched them waiting on an offramp and snag the culprits, after making a call.
