Given the permanently lowered state of the economy, I find it utterly bizarre how, when faced with the choice between cutting services, or raising taxes, the majority of public servants initial reaction is are always to save their expensive pet projects at the expense of struggling taxpayers.

I have a bad feeling that the voters will have to clean house everywhere in order to bring about real fiscal responsibility again, because the mindset of pretty much everyone is such that they cannot grasp the significance of life now in the real world of today, verses, the false economy that they had hopped would enable their grandiose plans to be realized. Everyone seems to think that we are going to somehow "recover" back to the false economy of the past and things will be all better then, but I've got a little real news for ya'll wishful thinkers...

"Big ideas" are out the window, because we don't live there anymore. The collapse of our false credit economy is not a temporary situation, so get over it.

And I'm guessing, Lauren, that you must have absolutely no idea what you are talking about when you say this:

""Currently, the Fire Department is funded through property taxes, which are notoriously unfair. For example, lots of folks who live in modest mobile homes — and they are legion in Tavares — pay nothing. Yet, it costs the same to send a rescue truck or fire engine to mobile homes as it does to million-dollar mansions. Nobody deserves a totally free ride.""

I believe that the fees that these people pay to the parks where they live are inclusive of fire-fees, and if so, then you are totally out of line, lady, and I'll stop there just so that I can remain nice about it.

Bloated Fire Services need more money. A volunteer department would be fine.

Actually Lauren does not usually bash the Good Ole Boys in Lake County. She is sucked to them and therefore never prints a true article about anything in Lake County. She is such good friends with Sheriff Borders she even got her girlfriend Laura Bott a job at the Sheriff Office. The one exception to her escapades is her attack against the Villages. Morse is connected at the hip with Lake County's Good Ole Boys and I can't believe they let her attack him like she did. After all in the good times Morse was their connection from the Governor to the Whitehouse. No connection to the Whitehouse now, that's change you can believe in.

You can't be serious. This is the dumbest thing i have ever heard of. You must be from New York. Everybody from New York is a volunteer fireman/captain/chief/EMT/etc. I hardly think $150-$200 a year is too much and bloated.

The city should contract the county fire to do the job. There are virtually no fires in Tavares. The ambulance corp could do the medical calls, the county fire could do the other calls, and the city could save a million dollars per year.

A fire tax in Tavares? As it is, we pay for a gross duplication of service. We have NO ambulances or Paramedics in our city, Lake/Sumter EMS transports all patients in the City and most times arrives prior to the Fire Department. And......95% of the Fire Department calls are EMS oriented. So we pay a couple million a year for a couple real fire calls already. Now they want to asssess us on top of that? Why not do a cost analysis of what we're really paying for here, and I'm sure anyone with common sense would back away from this ridiculous idea.

My mother lives in Tavares and has had occasion to call this fire department. She said that on both calls, the firemen acted as if she was an incovenience and were rather rude and abrupt. The gentleman who were on the ambulance corp were genuinely concerned and quite patient. I don't think this fire department deserves a tax increase and I don't think they care about the citizens.

Daily Horoscope for December 29

Libra

An emotional situation is as clear as mud today. You aren't sure about your feelings for a certain someone, nor are you convinced that you know what they're playing at. They may be saying one thing and doing another, and you might even suspect that they're playing games with you or trying to get what they can out of the relationship. Or maybe you're imagining the whole thing? Admit it - at this stage you simply don't know.
