Here's the problem for those of you who don't know what life is like at Keaau High. One, the school was built in a community of poverty because most families can't afford the cost of living. Majority of the families depend on "the system" because lack of jobs or cheap rent. Secondly there's nowhere for these kids to go and build relationships, self esteem or job skills other than going to the beach. If they go to the beach, what do you smell? Drugs? What do you hear? Screeching tires off of cars burning rubber? What do you see? Graffiti? Who's actually swimming or enjoying the fun under the sun? Younger kids. You rarely see teenagers actually ejoying themselves at the beach. The point I'm getting to is when our teen goes to school, they're surrounded by their peers which can mislead to whatever behaviors he/she might have whether its good or bad. On the bad side, the number one problem begins with "BULLYING". Under the DOE's Chapter 19, Bullying is defined by alot of issues. Yes Administrators have stressed to students over and over about being a Bully and how stiff the consequences are. There is help for thse kids in school by professionals. And with that said it is our job as parents to hold accountability of their actions by connecting with school officials on how my child can get help. Ask the school administrators for school based behavioral health therapsts, high risk counselors or mentors wether its the school security attendant, a teacher or a staff worker. The Kea'au community back in the day was all plantation before. It was a tight knit community who mostly worked in the sugar industry. Today with the high-speed age of technology, cost of living increases, population growth and the demand for residential zones, poverty start to kick in. People losing jobs, pay cuts, and all this financial issues, we are slowly losing the battle of our kids getting a full undivided education. On the bright side, Kea'au High is a great school with a good faculty and staff. I've known a few of the Administrators over the years, and they take alot of heat either from the media or the parents. KHS is not a perfect school, yes there's fights. What about Waiakea or Hilo High? Do they not a have a fight in school? Nonsense, thanks to the age of the internet, check out YouTube. Why does the media put Keaau High on the microscope? Because parents can't afford the media to keep it hush hush? Can a parent at Waiakea pay the media to keep it confedential? Yes because both parents work, or work 2 jobs. Seems like Keaau is just getting picked on period.

typical for this area..most these kids have families as ignorant supporting their behaviors as well!!!..You have teacher's in this school system who are users of illegal substances....and have you even lunched with teachers from this school?...just listen to how they egg this shit on. I have and I am disappointed with the schools here. First and foremost we must rid our schools of teachers who have drug habits to support!! Replace those teachers with those who have MORALS in alignment with they're communities...better yet...replace them all with computers!!!..I lost all faith in our public school system, because of a few bad apples!!!!

let them scrap. only the strong survive. all you soft fakas need to step out of your box and open your eyes. the worlds not some soft place where everyone likes you. NO. theres people out the there who use the week and if your not man enough to do something about it then yes you deserve to be picked on. back in 87 when i went to castle high when there was a "kill haole day" still going on. thats when all the locals would pick a day out of the school year to come to school and just lick haoles. im haole but born and raised in hawaii. i didnt stay home, i came to school with my steel toe work boots and a roll of quarters in my two hands and got it on. i had 5 guys waiting by my first period. yeah i got mobbed but i dropped the biggest one. went to my first period late with a bloody nose and a shut eye. the day got even better, i went to my 5th period later that day with 10 guys waiting for me and another haole boy. he dug out but i stayed and took my beatings. after that year and couple black eyes later i was no longer picked on "kill haole day". why? because the locals knew that atleast one of them is gonna get knocked the faq out, so i earned that respect. what happened to the haoles that didnt step? they took their beating all 4 years of their high school. some times things in life seem to really bad and ugly BUT your only gonna learn from it and get stronger. the human strives off of fear until you do something about it things are going to be hard

If your story's true, someone should make a movie about you. But - unless about antihero losers - stories about guys with more brawn than brains haven't been a good box office draw for a good fifty years.

As you would have it, a dog-eat-dog world in which majorities are free to assault minorities and, through brute force, deprive them of their human dignity, is an acceptable one. Thus, to heve the 'respect' of those who live like animals, one must prove that he is one of them.

From the profile your words provide of you, that philosophy doesn't seem to have brought you very far as a middle age man. That is, unless you think scrapping and perhaps beating your wife and kids are marks of human success.

It's time to take a few sober moments to reconsider whether 'what life was all about' to you as a teenager is an appropriate guideline for a grown man to be presenting to youngsters. It's time to grow up.

Man....some people make me laugh. I was born and raised in Nanakuli, on the Waianae coast of Oahu and all hawaii knows that Waianae is notorious for fighting. Nanakuli and Waianae boys are still fighting for generations past and to come. What this got to do with Kea'au? Well since moving here I guickly found out that altho kea'au high has its problems, it aint nothing like Nanakuli and Waianae which have riots all the time and how often do you hear about these riots I'm speaking of? Hardly ever, its because the schools there has gotten to the point that they just aren't reporting all of the fights and Kea'au high reporsts every fight. I personally figured that for every fight that Kea'au high reports, there are at least ten fights in Waianae, Nanakuli that has gone unreported and how do I know this, I still have very close ties with my family there.

The point is Shit happens. Whether its the jerk campus security or a crazy parent, its all a part of LIFE and it ain't neva gonna change. Those crazy people existed then and they'll exist tomorrow so either you adapt or you are road kill.
My whole generation of Hawaiians all learned the same way, God - Family - culture - Stand up and kick ass. People say they understand our culture, but they only understand what they've seen. Live Hawaiian and you'll know.

I raise all my kids, nieces and nephews to be christians. To be quick to forgive, and help anyone who needs help no matter if Haole or Hawaiian or Popolo. I teach my kids to walk away, but if pushed into a corner or if grabed, pound as hard as you can, with all your might. The saying goes.... the best defense for fighting is not be there. But do I deprive my kids from learning how to fight, Hell no! I make sure all my kids, nieces and nephews know how to fight so they are able to protect themselves and those they are trying to help.

Well anywayz dats my pennies worth.

i went to that school and the only thing that starts the fights and stuff like that is when the kids are board and have nothing to do so instead of being board they eye out each other and talk shit about each other just so that theres some thing to talk about with each other and do stuff like scrap maybe if there were more actives for them to do this kinds of things wouldent happen

You are all still very young. Racism is serious and exists everyday in the adult world too! I know I see it every day! You would "THINK" that adults would "know" better but they don't and pull this same kind of stuff day in and day out. It is your "neighbours" fighting over anything, ice houses, marriages that are dysfunctional, family abuse etc. You name it. Sad to say but so true! And it is all over The Big Island, Hawai'i, and the mainland.
