Oil Tank Insurance

I have an above ground oil tank. Does anyone know of any oil companies that also offer tank insurance/remediation services?

Try New Jerset Citizen Action Oil Group. I know that they offer discounted prices on oil with their suppliers. Might be a good place to start.
I don't know their number. I saw an ad for them in the yellow pages, or you can search online.

Does anyone know whether ProGuard is owned by a major oil distributor? Does anyone think the oil industry and the oil tank insurers have a conflict of interest whereby insurance is granted without adequate testing to give the consumer a false sense of security?

ProGuard is not owned by an insurance company. It is backed by an insurance company but in actuality it is a service contract between the homeowner and the fuel dealer. The dealer can have the contract reinsured by an insurance company which is the case with ProGuard. Navigators is the insurance carrier backing it.

I had an underground oil tank removed yesterday. The contractor that removed it was absolutely great, nice clean work in removing the tank and installing new one above ground.
BUT, I was insured by ProGuard and had to pay a $500 dollar voluntary tank pull fee. According to the contract I received from ProGuard am agent from that company was supposed to be on site for the tank removal...there was NO ProGuard agent on my property to witness the tank removal. Buyer beware, ProGuard seems to scam, and cheat the public. I am currently trying to get my $500 dollars refunded. Vice Pres. of ProGuard Bill Tott seems rather gruff and nasty with my request.

I haven't heard a lot of positive things about tank "insurance" unless it is through the homeowner's insurance policy. Luckily, if you live in NJ you can apply for a grant for tank removals and/or remediation should the tank leak. I know of someone who had a leaking tank and the company they went with was very helpful with the grant application process http://currenenvironmental.com/

I’m sorry that’s how you feel about ProGuard. All on-site adjusters are required to take photographs before and after the tank removal without exception. If oil had to be transferred, most likely the adjuster left and later returned once the tank was ready for removal. You may have only seen him leave.

In any case, you still received the benefit of being protected by ProGuard which pays for environmental cleanup up to $100,000 and provides reimbursement towards a new tank. That’s a huge burden to have off your shoulders!

I just got the proguard insurance. My tank is an underground tank & you can NOT get the insurance unless you have it tested, and provide all the documentation given to you after the test is complted by a third party.

We bought a house in Westchester last year with an underground oiltank. It was tested so we received the insurance from ProGuard.
This year we are planning to install a new oilburner, watertank, piping etc. and would like to pull out the old oiltank and install a new one in the garage.
I understood from all the conversation and the contract we have with ProGuard that a voluntary pulling of the oiltank isn't advisable, as in case of an oil spill (accidental release) which is found during the pull out the insurance company doesn't pay.Is that correct?
It would mean that it's better to leave an old oiltank better underground till it has an oil leak, in order to get the cost covered? Wouldn't it be better to pull the tank before it spills, due to environmental thoughts. Maybe I didn't get it right, any ideas?

Proguard Oil Tank "Insurance" is false. You cannot believe the catch 22 they force upon you. 1. You have an oil tank in the ground and you want to have it scrubbed and removed and documented. You want to switch to gas heat. well guess what?? After paying Proguard $245 a year for "protection" they require the following, which to me, appears to be a conflict of interest. 1. you call Proguard to notify them that you are removing the tank. 2. you pay proguard $500 for one person to watch the tank removal ($500!!). 3. BEFORE you can even remove the old tank, you MUST MUST MUST install a new oil tank, either above or below ground, and have it hooked up and filled and then and only then will they let you pull the tank with their overpaid inspector on site. I am absolutely apalled at this process. I wanted to do the righ thing and pull the tank but wanted to switch to gas heat. So now, I cannot do so with out paying the extortionary rate of $500 plus buying a new aboveground oil tank plus more oil. I can't believe the state of NJ hasn't gone after these people for this. So..for example..let's say... If I bought a car insurance policy through say toyota, the only way they'd cover replacing a totalled car would be if I bought another toyota??? isn't that bizarre! I am totally pissed at these people for the misrepresentation by them and their oil dealer. what should it matter to them that I buy another oil tank and fill it up BEFORE i remove my old tank. what should it matter to them, what business is it of theirs that I choose to switch to gas heat?
They should only be concerned about if there is an oil leak or not, then they should do the right thing and keep their commitment to paying for the cleanup if there is. This is absolute blackmail... I feel so cornered in by this situation I could scream.
