Rockdale County School System.....

The Rockdale county school system don't/won't support their school teachers....
Example: If students fights in a classroom and the teacher turns them into the administration for them to be dealt with and the students say they weren't fighting but the teacher actually sees it, the administration will not believe the teacher and do nothing to the students.
Example: If the students are disrespectful to the Teachers by back talking or even cursing at them, the administration will do nothing and will not believe the Teachers.
This not only provides a disservice to the students but provides no support for the teachers. No wonder this is a title 1 school district.
The administration to include the principles and even the school board should get on the band wagon. If they want a great school environment for the students, they should start listening to the teachers and backing them up.
If a student gets in trouble, it takes an act of congress to remove the students from the classroom according to the school board and administration in Rockdale County. This goes directly against the State Law in removing disruptive students from the classroom.
This is my .02 cents worth from a spouse of a school teacher.

what is this i just hope they straighten up cause no body wana be in a school or class feeling uncomefotable specially conyers i expect more they should stand out over all the surrounding counties of atlanta thank you for leting me speak out bye

I am sorry but that is completely untrue CaptAmerica. I went to Rockdale County high for a year and to Salem high for two years. Discipline is very strict and students always get punished for disrespecting the teachers or other students. Administration is always on the teachers' side. Take it from one who has been in the Rockdale County school district for three years.

I must agree...I have lived in this area for 5 years and I see where the administration protects the teachers and help the students. Their goal is to have a good school system. Please stop talking about school systems if you do not plan to lend a hand. Make a difference in your community. My children attend the elementry school and highschool. I am very impressed with the school system. It's the people who don't help that love to complain. "Change comes in numbers".

The bathrooms are locked in middle school-no behavior problems huh? Gangs are getting bad in Rockdale. There is little to no parent support. Behavior problems make teaching a difficult task. From first hand experience-CaptAmerica is very correct.

This hits the nail on the head. If parents do not become involved, education has no direction but failure. Involved means genuine concern and the ability to look at a situation and assess the areas that need correcting.
There are teachers, who would be better off working at Mc Donalds because they have a negative attitude.

There are also students who are fully aware that no matter what the problem, their parents will only take their side.
Differences in education cannot be based on race or on socioeconomic factors. They must be directed at the interests and abilities of the students. It is very neccessary that parents and teachers realize this fact and allow discipline to have a renewed place in education. Negative individuals are in the minority, but it is a very vocal and very physical minority. If a child doesn't want an education, don't let them waste the time of the other students who are more driven. Put them in a job training situation and let them learn that their attitudes will be a cost only to them.

Would someone please tell me. Who is a title one school, and what does that mean? Also, is it true that the high school diplomas given in Rockdale County are general diplomas as opposed to college prep or academic dipolmas?

Education is a major issue across the entire nation. There are several compounding issues regarding the status of our educational system. One of them of course is the outrageous "growth" this county has endured in the past 6 years. This growth has placed a heavy burdeon on all levels of our county infrastructure; from roads to education. There are certain facts that every citizen has to contend with, a majority of adult workers leave Rockdale county and to their jobs travel throughout Atlanta. The commute time has grown, for me doubled, because of the extensive grown in Atlanta. The school day is only 6 hrs., the average work day is 8 hrs.(not including commute). Where are the children? In daycare, afterschool care, or at home in front of the TV. The school system is stressed by the new educational goals set by the county, state and federal governments. The families are stressed because of the economics of survival. The county is stressed because someone thought it would be a great idea to sign a bunch of building permits without considering the impact on the county's infrastructure. The kids are stressed, well because their future is uncertain. As adults, we need to do our best to provide a bright future for our children. By supporting the teachers, being involved in our childrens' education and supporting our schools. Even if we do not agree with the administration. Remember, teachers are working adults, just like us, trying to provide the best education for our children.

To answer your question about general diplomas... Rockdale county offers College Preparatory Diplomas also, however the student decides which diploma is best for him. A student recieving a General education diploma can still attend college, however so remedial courses by be required A General diploma graduate can also qualify for the HOPE scholarship, but a higher GPA is required. I believe it is currently 3.2, but not positive.

I have been in Rockdale five years and even if the student is right the administration still protect them crocked teachers!!!Teachers are not always right

My son graduated from RCHS last year. Several things,#1 - Administration is not the "be all end all" when it comes "protecting students" from punishable behavior. Example: Last year a text message of a bomb threat was circulated, the school was shut-down, students had to be screened just to enter the building the next day. I myself could overhear announcements being made over the intercom at the end of the school day to the students, instructing them not to loiter, etc, etc... when I went to pick up my son from school. The police presence was stepped up overall the entire school year. A few of the teachers alienated themselves from their students by poor teaching of difficult subject areas as well as hostile attitudes in the classroom. These teachers need to be removed from the system. I understand that it is difficult, the textbooks are outdated, etc. Most of the problem students are not the ones that have lived in our county for many years but are the transient ones that move from county to county, never finding success. To make the blanket accusation that administration protects bad students is more just a gripe about the negative side of just afew bad kids. If your spouse wants to succeed he/she should focus on the good students that want to learn and send more attention their way. We all know that bad behavior is truly a call for attention and just like my dad used to say, "the more you stomp on dog poop, the more it stinks".

The best way to safeguard the achievement of your student is to stay involved with him, his teachers, the school, and the community. Talk is cheap. Know where your child is and who his friends are. Check his homework and grades frequently. Let him see you reading and watching quality programs on tv. Ask questions to see if he really understands the material being taught. Help him to appreciate the value of an education and the importance of respect for all those who are trying to provide it for him. If he misbehaves, provide appropriate punishment for his age. Avoid blaming others for his, or your, mistakes. Young people are very savvy, and they learn early to play the "blame game". It is very easy to earn an A in every subject. Go to class. Listen and assume responsibility for your own learning. Ask questions about things you don't understand. Seek support from your teacher if you have major issues you don't understand. Be quiet in class and listen with respect. Respect goes a long way in life, and the schools are trying to teach life skills, as well as "book" knowledge. Teach your child to respect himself and those around him. Teach him to use available school resources when he has difficulty and praise him when he does well. Embrace your responsibilities as a parent. All children can learn. If you don't believe this, you should not teach.

You would be crazy to send your child to Salem High. Gangs, violence and a revolving door with principals. It is a perfect example of what has become of Rockdale County. Go back to Atlanta!

Cameras In The Classroom!

Georgia is doing something new now. Everyone has to have the same diploma. All classes are for preparations for college. Everyone must be on the same level. I think that is stupid. Not all kids are on the same level.

Can anyone help me with a school question? We are about to move to Rockdale County and are hearing very different info about schools. We are looking at houses in going to Salem and Heritage. What are the pros and cons to these schools? Is one better?

Also, can anyone comment on Barksdale, Memorial, David or Edwards?
