I get both Bath County papers by subscription and pick up the Review at the stand. I read my Outlook Friday, my Bulletin today. There is a HUGE difference in their May Day sections. HUGE! Granted, the Bulletin looks far better, but they have crossed a line editorially speaking. The Outlook published the May Day candidate's personal information as submitted. I know this because it matches word for word with the program at the talent show last night. The Bulletin changed every single candidate's information. Why? Somebody got a hidden agenda? It is a fail.

As a retired journalist with many years of experience, I can tell you that it is a terrible, terrible mistake to not edit anyone's work in a newspaper. I have long been disgusted with laziness, incompetence and cost-cutting measures that ruin good newspapers. Everything done by the newspapers in our county, is done on the cheap. We get what they pay for. We are not getting what we pay for. Just my opinion.

Which newspaper do you prefer?

Chris needs to get some better guest writers or crack down on the content - or at least give Granny Sue and Harry a limit on number of words. You're the editor, Chris, so edit or get someone who will.

If I want crazy a$$ I'll listen to Glenn Beck, not read through Granny Sue's rants about bullets and drones and government conspiracies. And if I want to read the latest right-wing talking points, I'll listen to Fox News and get it right from the source.

I don't like some of the writers, too, but I would read all of them before I would read Heaven is a lot like Kentucky. What the hell is that anyway?

And if I want the Menifee County news, I'll buy the Menifee Post-Gazette. But, I don't want the Menifee County news, hence I do not buy the Bath/Menifee/Carlisle Outlook. Further, if I want a newspaper that is a copy and paste becaue we don't know how to make corrections paper, I will buy the Bath/Menifee/Carlisle Outlook. That is not what I want, so I buy/subscribe/advertise in the Bath County Bulletin. Nuff Said.

I don't get the Outlook because of those same complaints. But just because the Outlook sucks doesn't mean the Bulletin gets a pass on bad writing.

It's not a pass, it's a trade. The choice in our county is to do a quality paper and go broke, or give the people what they want and stay in business. Just because you have taste, doesn't mean everyone does. The Outlook has to put Menifee news in to be able to break even and the Bulletin has to put local columnists to be able to break even. We are not New York, Chicago or even Lexington.

I don't even know what to say to that. Are you claiming that people here don't want a quality paper? Chris simply needs to use his editorial privilege a bit and reign a few of them in. Telling Harry to go easy on the cat stuff would be a good start.

It's business survival and marketing 101. Listen, what Chris Bailey has done is astounding. We live in a time where newspapers are closing their doors every day. In that environment, he has started a newspaper in a small community that already has a newspaper and made it work. I'm not going to question what he has done because what he has done has worked. You can argue on whatever ground you want, but success and results trump them all.

Why are you so defensive? I never said Chris was doing a bad job or that he isn't successful (I don't know whether he is or not). I simply said a few of the columnists need to be reigned in and I'm not alone in thinking that. Ask around. If you or he or whoever can't take some constructive criticism from a reader then you have no business being in the newspaper business. Do you want to lose my fifty cents a week? Because the business maxim is for every customer who complains there are several more that feel the same way who aren't saying anything. But maybe you missed that part in Marketing 101. Maybe that's covered in 102.

It's just that those who do not like some particular columns, can just skip over them. Those who do like them though, can't create them if they're not there. Those who do not like pickled eggs don't stop going to the store because they're on the shelf. But those who do like those things will stop going if they're not there. Bailey was able to succeed because the Outlook stopped carrying so many things that people like. But, then again, you may have a point. People stopped buying the Outlook because of the things that were in there. Things like other county news. I guess time will tell. Interesting conversation, thanks for the chat, have a good weekend.

I read both papers. If the Outlook published raw material and the Bulletin published edited material, then we have a REAL problem. Almost all of the candidates and escorts can NOT write. Can we focus on that? Our school system should be DEEPLY ashamed.

Can't help but like the fact that people still take the time to write their opinions and thoughts on any subjct they want to. The bulletin is my favorite just for that reason. Granny Sue keeps it political, just a thought keeps it light and relatable. view from joes place is always good. and if you dont like what harry patrick has to say i guarentee you STILL read his column every time its in there.so i guess hes doing his job. I definitely have my favorite, but the outlook doesn't so the Bulletin is my favorite and the only one i subscribe to.
