I think that having another Walmart in this area is absolutely ridiculous. Two of them in the same fricken county? Is it really that hard for people to drive to Vestal instead? And why does it have to be another "super center"? Isn't one enough? We have so many big businesses in this area already. Im not even proud of growing up here! What do we have to show for this area? WOW- MORE JOBS? Thats the only reason I see this being good. With that said, why is it so hard to get a fricken job around here with so many businesses covering this area. Look at how many people we have unemployed around here. Noone wants to fricken work at WALFART anyways. Everyone I've ever met that worked there ABSOLUTLY HATED it. All im trying to say is stop building more shit we already have and start building parks and fields to play in. We should be thinking more about planting organic gardens and teaching our kids how to survive on there own with out all these stupid money munching companies.

Contact me if you would like to talk more about this. I know alot of people with big opinions on this "wonderful" (shitty) new idea of a WALMART!:(

Wow, Heather..way to show your maturity with the Walfart comment. Are you 10 years old?. And thinkingthat your friends reprsent 100% of the population. Hate to break it to you, but walmart has one of the highest grades for employee satisfaction.
No one cares that YOU are not proud of living in the area. Because NO ONE who has been in the area in the last 20 years should be proud of what Johnson City, and the triple cities became. Walmart will not make it worse. More parks is a WONDERUFL idea. But in typical tree hugeger hippies fashion, you seem to think that they just appear magically and for free. Johnson City doesn't even have the money to maintain their current parks. They sure as hell can't build new ones. Time to live in the real world, Heather.

I have to say I concur with your opinions John. I don't think the over-all promblem is Wal-Mart per se. I also do not see how you can state Heather, that no one wants to work there. If that is the case, who are all those people there in uniforms? If they don't want to work there, why are they working there? If you respond that they cannot find jobs elsewhere and take a job at Wal-Mart as a last resort, then kudos to Wal-Mart for offering them the opportunity. I do not like the idea of big business coming in and, yet again, drowninig out the little businesses, but the problem does not rely solely on Wal-Mart. I also do not know that the answer to all of lifes problems in the Triple Cities is more parks. You are right John that J.C. needs to maintain their current parks, as does Binghamton. This would certainly help to beautify the area (unlike the crap that Binghamton has wasted money on i.e. fake brick on the roads) and offer children a safe and comfortable place to play. I don't know that I have the solution to the problem of Wal-Mart (except that they should have considered Upper Front St. instead of J.C.) but I don't think slamming a business for climbing on a money train resolves anything.

well i only read the top person, and wow.i worked at walmart an it was great..the people were nicer than anyone else i worked with.see i would try to keep distance from working with people like you.but whats to hate about a job..i work at price chopper now AND i hate it...i clean up after immiture people all day...people who go th the bath room all over the floor...so walmart is a big step up from that.AND as for building new parks HA..look how much money we have already..we are using it on stupid things like the river walk that leads to well no where..we all need jobs anyways, and some of the people who arent working are because they cant find a job.it took me 5 months to find a job after MCDONALDS.yea they wouldnt even hire me the first time..someone who dosent have any bad backround couldnt get a job at the bigest fast food restaurant in the world.so i think walmart would be a good place, but also it would be better on upper front street.never thought of that.but yes walmart does have alot to offer and they wont pay min wage..they go by how long you have worked..you could start out with 12$ a hour...

Wal-Mart should not be put in our community. It is a harmful corporation that only provides it working class with and average of about 13,000$ annual salary, the average poor working class of America of about 15,000$. Wal-Mart is only a hazardous company that puts community to shame and works on the slave like properties of foreign countries along with giving employees with no rights to provide goods for the people for lower prices and tell them not to depend on there giving health care but to more fall upon the state health care, bankruptcy and welfare to provide a profit for its self. I am very disappointed in our community in its effort to stop another social terrorist in our working class let alone our health, taxes and community value. They give little to none back to our people. They fire employees that are called as suspicious to unionize. Being the age of 15 I would love to not have to fall for Wal-Mart for employment and suffer the cruel downfall of which all of its employees to suffer just to get buy in life. One day I would like for our people to realize all the negative effects that Wal-Mart has to the community it invades.

Thanks Christian...at least you made it clear htat you are just blindly believing the already THOROUGHLY debunked crap that those anti-Walmart "documentaries" spew. I bet you think that Michael Moore is a documentarian.(Most of the "facts" you repeated are proven lies, by the way.)

Bottom line...mom and pop stores are NOT coming back to Johnson City.(Or any city that has lost them.) Keeping walmart out will NOT make Main Street thrive again. those businesses are on life support and will never recover. The owners will make more money going to walmart for a job. People don't want to pay extra just to keep some 75 year old man in business when he can't see the writing on the wall and realize that the business his father founded is not profitable anymore. Oh, and ask the people working at those mom and pop stores what kind of benefits they are getting. Or pay. Answers...none and less than they get at Walmart.

As for Upper Front Street, blame that on the deal that the area made with Maines. No competing retailer can go anywhere near Maines.

1) Michael Moore is widely recognized as being a very respected documentarian.

2) Name something in those documentaries that has been "debunked."

3) Right-wing douchebags are in no position to say that others are repeating lies, based on the way the last couple of years have gone.

4) One Wal-Mart Supercenter being placed within 10 miles of another is going to cannibalize the other's business. The Wal-Mart in Vestal draws people as far south as Pennsylvania, as far north as Marathon, and as far east as Deposit. WTF does another in the general area accomplish?

Putting one in JC is a TERRIBLE idea and a waste of resources that could otherwise go towards a business that would fill another niche in the Greater Binghamton area. Want to make better use of that land? Give me a ****ing Citibank branch, a Blockbuster Video store, some high-class boutique stores (the Oakdale Mall does not count for jack here), a high-class restaurant on the level of the Plantation House and maybe even a higher-class hotel too now that this are has become such a joke that even the Holiday Inn has pulled out. THAT would make use of our wealthier citizens'(they exist) and SUNY kids' money (I would know; I'm one of them) and help the area better than another Wal-Mart. Or for the love of God, how about a good sporting goods/memorabilia store that actually stocks the stuff I ask for?

This idea smells of unoriginality. It's like killing the goose that lays golden eggs: "One Wal-Mart helped our area, so another must be twice as good!"

LOL, oh God, this country really is going to Hell when morons like these keep on breeding.

First of all, Johnny, Wal-Mart does not have higher grades for employee satisfaction. The numerous lawsuits they've faced that have cost them millions of dollars should tell you that. They've even been sued for not paying their workers overtime:

http://tinyurl.com/5ozg7c

Name one employee satisfaction survey that proves they're among the elite. I couldn't find one, but I found a customer satisfaction survey that proves they're among the lowest:

http://tinyurl.com/6racm5

And even now, that's almost 10 points lower than when they led the industry in 1994 in customer satisfaction. Wal-Mart is doing what it has to in order to turn a profit (I may be a liberal, but I'm also a capitalist). That doesn't mean that what's beneficial to them is necessarily beneficial to us.

As for your unsubstantiated vitriol about someone being a "tree-hugger," I wasn't aware that someone who wanted to reduce pollution and beautify our environment deserved such scorn.

shabeki from Binghamton, NY stated "The Wal-Mart in Vestal draws people as far south as Pennsylvania, as far north as Marathon, and as far east as Deposit."

You're absolutely right about the number of customers that travel to Wal-Mart to shop. I've looked at the parking lot during the weekend, and OMG!!! What about during those Super Sales days, like "Black Friday"? The million dollar question was: WTF does another in the general area accomplish? I'll tell you what, as you mentioned, people are traveling pretty far just to shop. This economy is terrible and it's not getting any better no time soon. Gas prices are rediculously hicking, so why not help our fellow tax payers by (1) creating more jobs and (2) making travel easier. I like the idea of another Super Wal-Mart, it'll split those traveling from either side of the existing Vestal Store in half. Those going to Vestal won't feel intimidated by the crowded parking lot, or even the crowds in the store.

As for the Mom-and-Pop stores... I do feel terrible about them, but lets face reality that times are changing, prices are hicking, people are struggling and more and more people are finding themselves on the unemployment line. We have to accept these stores with open arms, because it's stores like this that will help boost our economy right now.
