oh i agree this is a wonderful effort on this moms part to do something not only environmentally friendly but find something that works for her baby...of my four girls only one of them has fair skin and red hair the rest are brown eyed and olive to dark complected...the red haired daughter skin was so sensitive when she was little that if the tags on clothing rubbed her neck it would cause a rash...and forget about plastic diapers..had to be cloth...she was just super sensitive...the dr recommended castile soap in warm baths with the soap and rinse her in cool water...i had to hand wash her clothes in dr bronners baby soap-it has no fragrance and is very mild...finally when she reached 13 or 14 the allergies went away...Thank Goodness...

I just read an article in Readers' Digest about etsy.com and its founder. It's the Dec 09/Jan 10 issue if you're interested.

My son is sensitive to laundry detergent. I have been making my own for 6 years. Very simple
2 cups grated Fels Napha Soap (Ivory will also work)
1 cup WASHING soda
1 cup borax
Mix well and store in air tight plastic container.
Use 2 tablespoons per load.
All these supplies will be found with the laundry detergents.
For stains of all kinds (pets especially)I wet the corner of lye soap and go over it. Instantly takes pet stains out of my light carpeting.

Thanks for giving a recipe but this is not the one I use. This is a base recipe but does much better if it's tweaked. You should use a higher ratio of washing soda to soap as well as an added oxygen booster. Tea tree oil is also a good addition to handmade laundry soap.
