Oh yeah,the big,bad popo's kill again...SCREW YOU DUDE!
Put yourself in the officers shoes for a moment. Your staring down a mentally unstable individual behind the wheel of a 70 ton Euclid dump truck armed with only a handgun,a shotgun and possibly a centerfire carbine. He's trying to kill you and firefighters that have arrived at the scene and he's only a mile or so from a populated area-WHAT WOULD YOU DO? As for "shooting out the tires" none of his weapons really have the capability to reliably shoot out a car tire let alone a 6 foot tall tire designed to support 70 tons. I haul material outta Simplot and might have had an aquaintance with this guy. It breaks my heart to know someone lost his life like this, but he instigated a lethal confrontation and left the officer no choice. I can just see what would have happened if the officer had stood back and let him somehow out of the pit and into the neighboring town. Then you probably been bitching about how much of a coward he was for not protecting the public. You have no idea what this area is like or what kind of problems thay have. FYI,this is a very rural area populated by a devout, mostly Morman population. Its the kind of place that you leave your doors unlocked at night and I am quite sure that the entire town is in shock and disbelief. But I will tell you one thing, they stand behind their public servants. And another thing,I'm a professional trucker and I have lost no love for the NHP,but I would rather have a armed State Trooper in front of me than you behind me. Anytime you think its as bad here as IRAQ,why don't you hop on a plane and see how specious that statement is and STAY there while you're at it. In a nutshell;SHUT THE F*#K UP! Hell, you're in Michigan, what the Hell is it to you anyway? BIg Mike |

Big Mike, Thank you for setting this jerk straight. Adam(the guy who was killed) was a life long friend of mine. I have known him since kindergarden. It kills me to know what happend to him. I know that if he was not drinking this tragedy would not have happend. I, as well as the rest of us in Overton will miss him greatly. I do not blame the trooper for doing what he though at the time was the last resort defence for himself and the fire fighters at the scene. I wish it could have been handled differently, but as you said, there was no other way to stop him. Adam will forever be in our hearts, as well as his family. But the officer will not be forgotten in our prayers as he too is a member of the comunity.Just think, he has to live with the guilt of taking a life that had just began.(adam was 33)So thanks again, Rick.(Overton,Nv.) |

Rick,
My deepest condolences for your loss. I was once in the same place as Adam, but I was fortunate enough to have some friends that saw I was in trouble and made me get help. I could have ended up just like Adam,I was just luckier. Is there someplace to send funds for his burial or for his family? When and where are the services? You can reach me @ hidesertp71@yahoo.com. So that I don't open an email from some jerk, head the email with the name of the market next to(east of) the McDonalds, then I'll know its you. Maybe I'll ride up,we'll hit the Rooster and you can tell me about Adam. From what I hear,He really vented and Simplot isn't going to be open for sometime. That means I won't be heading up that way in the truck for awhile. Good Luck and try to just remember the good times. His torment is over and I'd like to believe he's in a better place. |

One more thing,I really don't like to think of the officer having to deal with"the guilt"of taking Adams life.
What the officer did was in the line of duty to protect the community. He should feel no more guilt than a soldier on a battlefield. Those of you that know him should give him whatever comfort you can muster and let him know he has nothing to feel guilty about. Regret,yes-but not guilt. I think all of us would like to make it through this life without the terrible knowledge of what its like to take the life of a fellow citizen. I hope that the people in the community realize that the officer took on this horrific task to spare them all from having to do it themselves. Should he get a medal,no-I don't think so and I'm sure he wouldn't want one either. He hoes a very tough row. He has my respect and support,I hope you will let him know. |
