Graham Norton and Ricky Gervais are in the Barrowman category. Simon Pegg could work, if he shakes the sad sack persona. Jude Law- too serious. Which leaves the other two, with whom I'm not familiar. They'd never recruit a Yankee for the role, but if you think of Robert Downey Jr.'s interpretation of Sherlock Holmes- well, there you go.

I just figured that Graham could decorate the Tardis. Ricky Gervais? Really? I love Idiot Abroad. So, who is just the right amount serious and humorous and not gay besides Robert Downey, Jr.

Did we discuss Simon Pegg? I'm not sure if he could pull it off, but his demographic works for me.

The didactic and pragmatic intentions of one falls short when they do not practice what they platutinize and sermonize.
