Full story: Orlando Sentinel

Just two weeks after the city turned on the cameras, more than 1,100 motorists have been cited for running red lights by Orlando's new traffic-surveillance system.

Add ten more cameras, and give the money to the schools to buy gas for those buses.

As long as accidents and injuries decrease, I have no problem with the cameras. But if over time we find they have increased then the cameras will not be performing the job they are meant to do. Give it a year and let's look at the numbers. I hope the city and an independent organization will both be tracking the effects, positive and negative, of these cameras. In addition, they should also make the yellows longer and have continuous 4-way reds.

By the way, someone who runs a light 40 seconds after it's turned red probably got tired of waiting at a red light when there was no other traffic anywhere near them. I'm not condoning it, but that is most likely the situation since I see it almost every day.

This is the best thing this city has done in years. They are finally holding some of these horrible drivers accountable for recklessly endangering the rest of us.

I wish they would put them up at the state intersections like John Young and Colonial. The state legislature has been an obstacle for too long. I am glad the city took the initiative.

I love it. They have been doing this in Germany for more than 30 years. Germans do NOT run red lights, but if they do, they get a similar ticket in the mail.

I have driven in all 50 states (most extensively), throughout Europe, Canada and Japan, and without a doubt the worse drivers in the world are in ORLANDO (I lived there 20 years). It's no wonder they have the highest insurance rates in the USA.

Finally, a tax(fine) that is totally voluntary. Maybe our real estate taxes can be reduced. Keep it up, you've got to be extremely stupid to have to pay these fines. SLOW DOWN.
PS. Lets put one on EVERY corner in FL. Just think of the revenue that will be made.

Mauz and friends must not be paying attention to all of us who have been t-boned in intersections by these careless jerks. I was lucky to have my daughter in her car seat and on the other side of the car when it happened. People have to pay better attention and learn that the yellow light means its time to slow down and get ready to stop, not floor it and put my family through the kind of trauma that no one should have to experience.

Have been the victim of a red light runner at Primrose and Livingston.I work on the corner of Concord and Magnolia and have seen plenty of red light runner accidents.Have almost been hit there also a few times trying to cross Magnolia at Concord St.I always wait at the green a few seconds to make sure traffic stops before I cross. I think the cameras are a great idea and long over due.

The argument that accidents may increase because people may slam on their brakes causing a rear ender is assinine. The person causing the rear ender was following too closely. Increasing the length of the yellow light and overlapping reds is probably a good idea. What about people that make a right turn on red without making a full stop and making sure there is no oncoming traffic? This problem is almost as bad.

Did anyone but me notice the Police car sitting at the intersection where the tagged a red light runner? It appeared that the Police office just sat there? He could not have been on a pursuit, no lights flashing. Was he on a donut run? Or maybe he was trained by the Sanford PD

If you run red lights, I'm sure that you speed through neighborhood streets and basically ignore rules. THIS IS A WELCOME addition to Orlando and will hopefully encourage people like this to MOVE. It is interesting that so many people that violate the rules live by the "poor me" attitude. Obey the laws of the land and you will enjoy life and be less angry than the rest of us.

it's such a simple philosophy. don't run the red. i don't understand the problem people have with this.

it's very simple, cut and dry. red = stop.

As a European who is used to speed and red-light cameras, I think this is a good thing. We live near Champion’s Gate, which has a speed limit of 35 MPH, which is never observed; speeds of 50 MPH and higher are regularly seen, as is red-light jumping. It never ceases to amaze me how little respect drivers have for speed limits and traffic lights. Until now there has been no real deterrent, as it is not possible for the Sheriff’s department to monitor all the limits and lights, all the time. However, now these cameras can. The excuse to say that these cameras will cause more rear end shunts is laughable. We heard loads of these claims and some even more ludicrous, when cameras came into use in Europe. The loudest protesters were, of course, all the offenders that got caught. Fact is, if you maintain a safe distance and prepare yourself to have to maybe stop at an upcoming light, you will have sufficient time and distance to stop safely. It is the ‘race the lights’ mentality that causes the rear shunts, not the traffic light changing to red. I hope the next step is the introduction of speed cameras and a total ban on cell phone use whilst driving. Both have significantly contributed to road safety since being introduced in Europe.

Right, Dan. And to add, yellow DOESN'T mean speed up, the light's turning red!! You have to consider the mindset of the bumbling fools driving here...it's all about ME! Then again, most of the driving populace considers Wheel Of Fortune "educational" programming...

Screw the "2 second or less" 9 out of 10. There are yellow lights for a reason. They warn that the light is about to turn. If they want to take the chance, let them be caught.

I have no sympathy.

Michele Biecker you are not mad because you broke the law, you are mad because you got caught. Get your foot off the gas and obey the traffic laws. If you hate this city then leave. Go to podunk USA where there are no lights and you should be just fine.
