First, this article says, don't get a pool. But, if you do, use a salt system or UV system, because chlorine is a toxic chemical that we shouldn't be swimming in or drinking. But, slat systems make chlorine???? How does a salt system save you from toxic chlorine if chlorine is what it makes????

Not to mention that once you've poured several hundred pounds of salt into your pool, you've made your pool water brackish. It is now contaminated with what the EPA recognizes as a Class 2 contaminant. This article on how to make your pool "green" is one of the most misleading mish moshes of disinformation I've read in a long time.

It's just the same tired old salt and ozone sales pitch to get you to buy an extra electronic box to hang on your pool. A box that uses electricity and increases the overall electrical load of your pool, increasing it's environmental footprint.

You really need to re-think this idea that salt pools are environmentally friendly. Inaccuracies/omissions in this article:
1.Salt pools still make Chlorine out of salt, so you are still swimming in Chlorine with all the toxic by-products, albeit less.
2. Ionization can be used to totally eliminate Chlorine use, just do a Google search for Chlorine-Free Pools.
3. The most energy efficient pump was not even mentioned - the new variable speed pump - an amazing energy saver!
4. i don't know if Chlorides into the sewage system or groundwater are a problem in Florida, but all over the US brine discharge is increasing chloride levels in rivers and lakes, causing a whole host of problems. Google Santa Clarita Chloride for a sample of that info.
Sounds like a salt chlorine generator salesperson sold you on the idea that salt was environmentally friendly for pools and you bought it.

You can use solar very easily to heat your pool. Look at GreenEnergyTV.com for solar videos:

There are many ways to make a pool "green," but I didn't see any mention of an insulated pool structure for a naturally warmer pool. One that uses less energy if you choose to heat the pool as a lot of folks do on the East Coast and other areas with cold climates. I also agree with Wendy, the new variable speed pumps are much more energy efficient. People are going to always want swimming pools; we just have to start building smarter and more efficiently with energy conservation and the environment in the front of our minds.

Yes chlorine is dangerous to handle and to the environment, but that is pure chlorine. As soon as you add the Chlorine to a pool (of any form) it converts into HCLO a week acid, which kills allege. A salt water generator is safer and greener because it takes handling pure chlorine out of the picture. The chlorine generator pumps electricity in a closed cell through the water converting the chloride ion which is dissolved in the water form the salt (NaCl or sodium chloride) into chlorine and since this chlorine is already in water it immediately turns it into HCLO.

Thus don't listen to the garbage about toxic chlorine, your not swiming in it, you'd be dead.
