Hispanics might be able to join an Orange County schools biracial committee, but they would have to call themselves "white" or "black," a district spokesman said Thursday. Full Story

Hispanic isn't a race. It's a culture. The whole concept of race is so outdated. But we, as Americans, love to "check a box" to define ourselves. Or add a hyphen. This notion of the change we need, in our society, to change our definition of our ourselves is HUGE, and not something OCPS is in charge of. Let the dialogues begin.

Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race. If they went to be on the bi-racial committee then black hispanics and white hispanics should participate as members of their respective race.

Not even the Nazis were as race conscious as 21st Cent Americans. The 3rd Reich didn't end well either.

Rediculous! Anyone who imagines there are only two races in this county hasn't stepped outside their reading room for twenty years.

I don't care if they choose a race or not. I just wish they'd choose another place to not work, not contribute to society, and not make their boring food.

The only fair way to solve this is with an official Orange County School Board "color chart".
You may end up with the occasional black albino or tanned white guy on the wrong side, but all in all, it should even out.

I agree. These people are too stupid to understand the FEDERAL COURT RULING that decides this committee's makeup. The School Board can't just willy-nilly decide how they want to apopint this board. A FEDERAL JUDGE decided decades ago how this board is made up. Before you play the race card, learn the issue and educate yourselves on what you're protesting against. Stop playing the race card and understand the topic.

just like the ricans not wanting to choose, they just want. If it was FREE from the goverment they would choose.
..Just like whites to complain about latinos taking their jobs and women.

..Just like blacks expecting a handout because their...well...black.

You want to start pointing little race specific things that races do? I could go on.

Yep. No point in changing the court precedents set in the sixties.
If the good NAACP thinks we shouldn't disturb rulings with deep historical roots, perhaps he would be happy if blacks had their own lunch counter, bathrooms and water fountains at woolworths.
If I were Hispanic, I'd choose white just because of that moron's comment.

When Hispanics are referred to as a race some complain Hispanic is not a race it is a culture. Now the same want to be referred to as a race. Sounds like they don't know what they want.

The paper goes to Armando from Osceola for a comment. Armando will promote anything his group does not work for. His people have rejected him numerous times and now the paper goes to him for an opinion.
Asking Armando an opinion is the same as the paper asking Jeffery Dalmer or Henry Lee Lucas an opinion on killing. You know what the answer is going to be.

Thank you Sentinel for your bias reporting.

There are some really ignorant comments made on this posting. There are good and and in every race. You don't hear latinos complaining about african americans or whites. You all are upset because yes we are taking your jobs because we do them better than you and in some cases we do them cheaper and yes we manage to raise a family with less, you don't see us driving around cars that take 8 years to pay off and taking on mortgages that are 5 times your income with no verification. Before you make comments please look in the mirror and ay your own race. Most of the people that live in this country with the exception of the native american indians have migrated here from another part of the world be it 1st generation or 10th generation. This is so sad.

How about an organization with the resources goes to court and challenges the need in today's society for such a committee anyway?

After the current practice is struck down, get 10 educated people with common sense (regardless of race) to make recommendations instead of discriminating on the basis of race?

Why do people always confuse hispanic with a race. Hispanic is NOT a race. I'm married to a Colombian woman and she will tell you real fast that in her birth country there are black, white, indian and mixed races. But there is no race called "Hispanic". At the most you can call Hispanic an ethnicity.

Much ado about nothing. Seems like blacks, latinos, whites spend more time bickering trivial issues instead of actually working or producing something.

This is positively disgusting. Positively Racist, and positively disgusting. "Choose a color, only white or black" our school district states. The entirety of the district administration AND their court order should be completely dismantled at this point. I am not even Hispanic and I am absolutely appalled, disgusted, and hope to God that someone pays a HEFTY price for this absolute IDIOCY. It is not about being politically correct, it is about absolute imebeciles running our systems.

Hispanics: the largest minority in America, has got to be the least represented. Our system is set up for the advancement of "colored people" not for the advancement of hispanics. We need to change to reflect the new America, instead of gripping on to the past...

"Race" as defined in Webster's and other sources
"a family, tribe, people, or nation belonging to the same stock b: a class or kind of people unified by shared interests, habits, or characteristics."

With that defination in mind, Hispanics would definately be their own race. When you entertain arguments of racial balance then it should not be limited to black and white. This type of argument should entertain views from all races.

That's what happens whey you play race games.
