Let's get this board active again.
Anyone have any thoughts on the run off election between Ms. Nieto and Mr. Medrano?

Isn't change the theme of the current political season? Everyone knows where we've been in the past, but people should really ask where they want this community to be in the coming years. I would like to know what makes each candidate anxious to be on the counsil?

Personally, I think Ms. Nieto is going to do a good job on the council. I hope the new city council and the new mayor work together as a team to make Mathis grow and prosper. It's amazing how productive things can be if everyone works together!

I myself do not live within the city limits, so therefore I could not vote in the resent run off election. I am curious to what makes a person vote for who they vote for? Is it their political standing as far as being a democrat or republican? Is it that you just don't like one person over the other or is it, with the resent election, man verses woman? I have seen for myself many of people cross the political “wall” to vote for someone based on their gender or their personalities and I wondered if that is what I should be doing? I was taught that once you chose a side that is the side you vote for, regardless of race or gender or what ever you might find else wrong with your candidate. You stand behind your beliefs as a democrat or as a republican, and if you feel that your candidate is not right then I think you should tell them not just leap over that wall.
I hope the right person for the job won the election based on their views and not their gender!

They are not slaves, but they are employees, and I'm sure their job description doesn't include a clause that allows for extended periods of rest during the day because it's hot. People have choices to make, and their job is most certainly one of them. If you don't want to work in the heat, find new employment. I think Mrs. Nieto is doing what her constituents elected her to do, and since you weren't there, everything on which you are commenting is most likely taken out of context.

Bravo Satirical!

I guess the mud has to start slinging sooner or later.
I totally agree with Satirical and Mrs. Nieto.

Dont want work with kids? You dont babysit
Don't want to work out in the heat? You dont get a construction job,
Don't like to swim? You dont work as a lifeguard!
Simple as that!
Yes its hot but I am sure the city provides alot of water or the employees get to stop at the local stores and buy themselves something to cool off with.

gotta love the He said She said groups.
Without them Satirical would be so lonely lol
Have a great day!

look im not trying to start problems but if your from mathis or have been in mathis for a while u come to relize that there are not very many choices when it comes to jobs....so maybe the people who work for the city dont have any other choice and choose to work instead of living off the gov. and saying that they have made the choice is some times not true because we do not choose to be born in to poverty it just happens and atleast these men are working........ stop and think about it what if u did not have the opportunities u had.... where would u be and would u want people to speak of u the way u are speaking of these city employee's...... remember TREAT PEOPLE THE WAY U WOULD WANT TO BE TREATED...... PEACE LOVE AND HARMONY :)

Maybe the council-woman should have stopped and asked the workers what they were doing, instead of throwing them under the bus. Maybe she should have talked to the city manager and asked him to speak to the public works director, that's his job not hers. I'm pretty sure she has no clue what those workers were doing. Beleive it or not some jobs do require some workers to stand around. If one is in a trench they others stand by to assist should that trench collasp..and so on. Sometimes they are awaiting equipment or parts. Maybe she should be trying to figure out how to pay these guys what they deserve, they're earning little above minimum wage. "More Pay more motivation". That's the problem with small time politicians, they never know their role. They get themselves 'mailed in' to office and suddenly they're experts in civil engeneering and human resources. I'll support these guys and applaud them for continuing to work in our city despite its imcompetent leadership (and I used the term loosely.

Part of a city representative's "role" is to bring the concerns of the community to light so that the people in charge (e.g. city manager and directors) become informed that issues such as the Mathis debris have become problematic for the taxpayers who take time to upkeep their lawns and in addition the alleyways which are direct property of the city. She merely mentioned that this area has been neglected and if you do not believe her drive around town and find at the very least a handful of alleys that have been maintained or recently maintained areas. Yes workers do stand around in various occupations from time to time but that does not excuse the fact that there is a major debris and general maintenance problem in this area. Finally, I couldn't agree more with your statement of the problem with small time politicians is they never know their role...that is precisely why Medrano didn't win...your not suppose to become so close to departments and employees that it hinders you from carrying out your responsibilities effectively. And the last time i checked I had to working legs and arms and I went in on early voting and voted for Ms. Nieto and I take offense that you take away from that... despite what you may believe the entire town of Mathis does not adores Mr. Medrano Jr. As far as I am concerned Ms.Nieto did her job she brought up a major concern of citizens (if it was not both sides would not have pushed the issue so hard) and brought it up at a regular public meeting in front of the public works director and the city manager. I know hard to believe right...someone actually doing what they said they would do...their job!

I have the opportunities I have because I made them. This is going to be difficult for you to understand, but I don't care what people say, or think, of me. I really don't. I only care about what my children have, and what they need. Again, however, it's the situations I created, and the opportunities of which I took advantage, that is responsible for their status, and I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth. I was never too proud to work hard, and work menial dirty jobs, to get what they need. You should treat employees the way you want to be treated, but not at the expense of not doing their job; not that they aren't. I am simply pointing out that whining about your job doesn't improve your circumstances. If they aren't happy, then they should change their circumstances. Peace, love, and harmony, is a great fantasy, but it doesn't put food on the table. I encourage you to actually attend the city council meeting next time you want to comment on what someone said, or actually meant in the context of the conversation.

Daily Horoscope for December 23

Aquarius

Someone is being bombastic and overbearing, and you don't like it. You aren't prepared to take their behavior lying down, but standing up to them is likely to result in a rip-roaring row. Well, it seems that the row is almost inevitable, and perhaps that's just as well because it won't do you any good to swallow your anger or tolerate this person's boorishness for much longer.
