Lynn,
I visited Opp in October and I'm glad they are tearing it down. The windows had been broken out, graffiti on the building, and generally it was falling in on itself and had become a danger. If tearing it down brings new life to Opp, I'm all for it. I no longer live in Opp/Andalusia and never will again, but it will always be home and it breaks my heart every time I come home and see how Opp has dwindled away. |

Sad to see the building being demolished. I know it was in very bad shape...but it's always sad to see a piece of Opp history go away. I took a stroll around the building today and took some photos of it. You can see them here:

I'm pretty sure I got a haircut across from that building a few months back. Is that the same place?
I hate to see it go. I heard it was used for a shelter at times. |

does anybody know any more ghost stories about the manor or grancer harrison graveyard in kinston?
|
||||
|
harrison graveyard- seach google for the book "13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffery" it has the story all in it. or search google for harrison graveyard. Basically, it is said the man was burried in his king side bed with his violin, and you can see him sitting/walking in the graveyard playing his violin.
the manor- they say its haunted by old dead people. |

I hate to see it go. It is part of Opp and it would have been great to see something become of it. I know that it would have took alot to fix but it is history.

I thought there was going to be a minimall or something built where the old Covington Manor was. Sure takes a long time for any thing to get done in Opp.

GOOD! Everyone complains about how there is no new business/industry in Opp. Well, when most of what you have to choose from is old dilapidated buildings (old paint, bricks/mortar falling apart, old busted windows, etc.), it makes it hard to draw anything in. Of course, everyone wants to "preserve the past". Sure thing; they're called pictures and books. Take a picture, write a story on it, and then tear it down, so a more modern, up-to-date building or buildings can be put in their place. Sure, you can spend $$$ to try to renovate an old building, but after spending thousands of dollars on an old building, you still have just what you started with: an old building. You could take that same money, and build a very nice, sharp modern building ready for business tenants. And it's a lot more pleasing to the eyes. If you want progress, you have to make way for it; stop clinging to the past too much. Bring out the bulldozers. |
