Legislation aims to stop gang crime
“We are willing to do anything to get this problem under control.”
Local officials applauded efforts announced by state lawmakers Wednesday to enhance laws targeting criminal street gangs.
In Tallahassee, Florida Atty. Gen. Bill McCollum; Sen. Jeff Atwater, R-North Palm Beach; and Rep. William Snyder, R-Stuart, proposed legislation that would include several anti-gang measures.
The legislation also would enhance the ability of prosecutors to seek racketeering charges against gang members.
Using racketeering laws, law enforcement and prosecutors can seek convictions based on the totality of a gang member's crimes if they are found to have benefitted the gang as a criminal enterprise. Read more
