People in our area put out large dishes of water in their yards for the birds, squirrels, and passing stray dogs and cats. Most replenish the water 3-4 times a day, and some even add ice.

Pets such as dogs and cats require water in order to cool down-- they can't sweat on a hot day like humans.

The water is VERY necessary for them to avoid heat related problems.

Another important point: just like you would never leave a baby or young child in a parked car with closed windows on a hot day, do not leave your pets there either! Leave them at home in a cool place, or, if they are in the car with you and you must park and leave them, make sure the vehicle windows are lowered enough to allow a sufficient air flow between them.

Parked cars can become ovens on hot summer days.

It's also important to hose down outdoor dogs with cold water several times a day. What really cools them is being wet and lying in front of a box fan on the patio. Clip those dogs with heavy coats.

Every year there are horrible stories about dirtbags leaving their babies and animals to die in parked cars, all due to inattention, ignorance, cruelty, and just plain stupidity. It's a horrible death.

Let me add: No, leaving the windows down a bit does not help. The car still becomes an oven in these temps.
