Tremors rattle people awake across Chicago area

Definitely felt it here in Champaign. I'm in a solid dorm, so I'd imagine it was a lot worse for people in just houses. It woke up a decent amount of people here.

I am moving to LA on May 1st. Figures Illinois would give me a farewell earthquake. Still, having been through many earthquakes in LA and Mexico, I'd say this one was like being rocked in a cradle.

I was at work in Taylorville, Il when it hit. My whole desk was shaking. I was thinking that a co-worker was playing a prank on me. I freaked out when I didn't see anyone and went to see the other 3 people in the building. They all thought it was wind. Then an aftershock hit and it was to the doorway it was!

I am in East Moline, IL., and I felt the quake at 4:39 (roughly), the shock lasted for approximately 15 seconds. Having lived in California I knew it was a quake. I actually checked the USGS and the information and it was not posted, at that time.
Hope everyone is doing well, cv |

I was sitting at my computer watching TV and eating breakfast when I heard a small creaking noise. Because we have wooden floors and our cat (at 15lbs) often makes the floor creak when he walks by, I thought it was him. It then turned into more of a cracking sound followed by what felt like a wave; the impression I got was that someone large had walked behind me and the floor had sagged enough to cause my chair to roll slightly backward. The 'roll' went up and down about two times, but it was enough for me to wonder how our cat could cause that to happen. I looked behind me to see where the cat was and to my surprise, I saw him sitting in the sunroom, 40' away from me! At the time, I had no other explanation and thought maybe our 1912 condo had a few residents from a past life that weren't happy with my choice of the Andy Griffith Show!

I had never experienced an earthquake tremor. I thought my house had gone all Exorcist on me here in Glasgow, Ky. Scared the YOU KNOW WHAT out of us. We were ready to have them fly in the Pope from DC to help us out with whatever kind of demon that had invaded our home...LOL!!! I had already gotten up and over to the herb and resin cabinet and was pulling out the frankencense and myrrh and was getting ready to light a black candle to ward off the evils and do a house blessing here till I realized what had happened. No kidding it did scare us bad. Hope all is okay at the epicenter!

Here's a U.S. government web site where you can see the map of the quake location and up to the minute details about it. Being from CA, we consult this often: http://quake.wr.usgs.gov .

I woke from a sound sleep. I'm on a high third floor of a brick building near the El. I felt side-to-side movement (I think) and knew it wasn't train vibration. This is the first quake I have felt here in my 17 years in the city!

I was up late and I felt my apartment move suddenly to the left and I was like "okay, now I know I HAVE to get more sleep or read less Palachuink because i'm losing it" then I saw the track-lights swaying and one of them was out and I was freaking-out like "what?" then I checked facebook and found out alot of my friends felt it too. Weird.By the way, I live in Chicago.

I was still in bed and my bed was shaking. I had no idea what it was. I thought I was shaking cold or my furnace was rumbling for the first time ever. Then the news came on at 5 with my alarm and WGN right away announced it was an earthquake!

In Champaign I woke up at 4:40, thinking about earthquakes, and then felt about 10 seconds or so of shaking. I don't know if this was an aftershock, or if I woke up in the middle of the tremor. A minute later I felt another brief shake. It reminded me of a similar quake I felt in Pekin about 1987. Creepy that it is the 102nd anniversary of the San Francisco quake.

My alarm had just gone off and I hit snooze. Then the bed started shaking, he headboard rattling and the shower doors in the bathroom rattled. After seeing that there was no wind I knew right away it must have been an earthquake.

I was awake at that time and felt the room shake, and heard a tapping noise and the plant leaves ruffling. I woke up my husband because I thought someone was trying to break in!

I live in the West Loop of downtown Chicago. I felt the building sway and what sounded like a large gust of wind. I remember thinking it was odd but then went back to sleep. Just turned on the TV and heard it was an earthquake.

I live in an old apartment building at U of I and I definitely felt it. I was up all night doing homework, so I thought I was going crazy, but now I know I definitely felt the shake and saw all of my stuff swaying...

My cat woke me up right before it started. He was very agitated. I got up and then felt the tremor. Some pipes were knocking in our house here in Montgomery, IL. Reminded me of the one in '91 when I was a student at SIUC.
I hope Wrigley Field is okay :) |

LOL-I was actually relieved when I read this. Woke up about 4:15 went downstairs to read book so as not to disturb husband. Curled up on couch with book. Little while later it felt like a large animal walked underneath/behind couch-even though couch is against wall. Kind of a shuddering feeling-like a train rumble. Didn't hear anything. Relief because I couldn't figure it out-thought I was having some sort of seizure/spasm. LOL.
