I used to work in that program. Unfortunately, it would be VERY easy for a patient to walk away and not be missed for awhile. It is good that attention is being focused on this incident. There needs to be significant changes made.

I am familiar with the BMC in Loma Linda as I used to be employed there. I don't think the article mentions which particular program this young girl was in, inpatient or outpatient, but either way it is very easy for someone to walk right out the front door whenever they choose. There is a button to push to "buzz" yourself out into the front lobby if not a staff member, and usually the person working the front desk is not familar with patient faces. A 14-year-old patient could easily be mistaken for a visitor, or one of their adult patients from the chemical dependency unit who are allowed to come and go, especially if she looked older than her age. If somone was to be on their way in or out of the hallway into the lobby, it would also be very easy to sneak by with them. This type of facility obviously attracts children, young teens, and adolescents who have behavioral problems and problems with substance abuse, among other issues, so it is a wonder that tighter security measures are not in place to ensure things like this don't happen. I'd be shocked to hear that this hasn't happened before.

She wanted out. What should they have done, put her in a straight jacket? The parents need to ask where they screwed up so that they had to place their daughter in a behavioral center...drug rehab or suicide for attention?

Parents, quit trying to find people to blame or hold accountable. Own the problem and that is your daughter! With or without a drug problem, you created her, trained guided her to where she is today.
OWN YOUR PROBLEM, UNLESS THEY GUARANTEED YOU A FULL LOCKDOWN / ESCAPE PROOF FACILITY.

Has there been an update to this story? Have they found their daughter? As a parent, I would be just as outraged as these parents are for not making sure that their minor child would not be able to leave this facility without an adult present....I really feel for these parents and hope that they find their daughter alive and well...thoughts and prayers are with you....

My thoughts and prayers are with this young girl's family because, regardless what most of you think about the parents in the situation, no one knows the circumstances and, therefore, cannot judge. Sadly, this girl is probably somewhere with a "friend" whom she arranged to pick her up from the facility the day she decided to disappear. It wasn't too long ago that I was her age, and this is what I would have done. Just a theory. Anyways, I hope they find her and that she is ok.
