These red light cameras are a complete scam. $500 a ticket is a robbery of the public. It is not proportionate to the violation. Most people are afraid to even make legal right hand turns out of fear of a ticket, holding up traffic. Get rid of them.

The real reason they are dumping Redflex Traffic Systems:

Frank IwamaA second appellate ruling has struck down a California city's red light camera program as illegal. On September 22, the California Superior Court for the County of San Mateo, Appellate Department overturned motorist Al Bullock's $387 conviction for making a right turn on red. Presiding Judge Mark R. Forcum concisely found that San Mateo's cost neutral contract with an Australian company, Redflex Traffic Systems, was in direct violation of state law.

"Reversed," Forcum wrote in a one-word decision.

Redlands started its Citrus/University camera in May 2008 with 280 tickets issued that month, then by that September it was down to 131 tickets - which was to be expected. Then someone convinced the court that the yellow was too short, and the City was compelled to lengthen it. They issued 17 tickets in October 2008 (an 87% drop), and it's not been over 22 since then. That raises two interesting questions: Why didn't the City make refunds to the 800 or so people who got tickets, but shouldn't have, between May and September 2008? And why didn't the Court order the City to make those refunds?

Some cities ARE making green. Riverside issued $1 million worth of tickets, in one month, via its camera at Tyler/91, near the Galleria. Corona, Moreno Valley, San Bernardino and Victorville are all issuing enuf tickets to make a big profit. Their cameras are set up to trap visitors, so the best thing for motorists to do is to never get off the freeway in those towns.

Finally, readers need to know about Snitch Tickets, which are fake/phishing red light camera tickets sent out by the police in an effort to get the registered owner to identify the actual driver of the car.(Local cities using this "social engineering" tactic are Corona, Loma Linda, Moreno Valley, Riverside, and Victorville.) Snitch tickets have not been filed with the court, so they don't say "Notice to Appear," don't have the court's address and phone # on them, and usually say, on the back (in small letters), "Do not contact the court about this notice." Since they have not been filed with the court, they have no legal weight whatsoever. You can ignore a Snitch Ticket. If in doubt, Google the term.

Every morning, while going to work, I cross the Bea Valley/I-15 red light intersections. These things are nit working correctly! I've seen them go off when the winds blow, on a totally green signal, thus blinding any driver who was looking towards the strobe lights. I've seen them repeatedly f;ash on a empty intersection, and I've seen them fire the second the light turns yellow. Anyone who received a red light ticket ought to sue the agency who runs them. Our lives are at risk, all in the name of more city revenue.

Kind of funny how the only studies that show an increse of safety from RLC's are the ones funded by the insurance industry. They didn't mention Peoria, AZ where accidents more than doubled from RLC's and a recent report out of Grande Prarie in Canada were accidents were up 124%. How ridiculous that the "municipality" has to give it's citizens a 30 day notice that they intend to enforce the law? Are they going to have to get voter permission to hire new Police Officers in the future?

The increase in accidents is driver stupidity and driving too fast to stop. The cameras have nothing to do with it. Heck let them run the red light as kill someone. Bottom line is drivers don’t respect the law and are always in a hurry. As an example the phone law, how many drivers do you see everyday talking and texting on their cell phones? The law doesn't mean anything until you kill someone else’s family member or even one of your own. Turn signals are not regularly used, I guess drivers are afraid to burn out the light bulb and not concerned for other drivers on the road. While in the left turn pocket you still have to use it.

Take the $6,000 per month/per camera and hire 4-5 new police officers to do real work. Those cameras are so stupid. They are just a money making thing for cities and now the cities are getting bit in the butt by RedFlex and are paying that stupid company all that money and not getting enough people to run red lights and build revenue.

Finally, the truth has come out about red-light cameras. When they were going in everywhere, we were told it was all about safety. Now that the revenue stream local governments were promised by camera companies like Redflex and Nestor hasn’t met expectations, the cameras are being tossed like last year’s cell phones.

Red-light cameras are a misguided attempt at solving a problem that has plagued traffic lights since their invention: insufficient warning of an impending light change. As Redlands Police Chief Bueermann found, lengthening the yellow light is at least as effective at quashing red-light running as cameras. However, the yellow light still doesn’t provide enough information for motorists to make proper decisions when approaching a signal. Every signal has a moment of uncertainty built in; as drivers know all too well, when a light turns yellow shortly before one reaches an intersection, a split-second decision is required: either slam on the brakes or try to “make” the light before it turns red. This is why the yellow is jokingly referred to by some as the “go-very-fast” light. Those attempting to pass on a short yellow comprise the lion’s share of red-light runners.

Instead of cameras, signals should be outfitted with a numeric display that clearly shows the number of seconds remaining on the current green light. A visible countdown will remove this band of indecision and drastically reduce red-light running.

Synchronizing signals with each other so that fewer red lights are encountered would further address the problem.

The time is right for municipalities to stop wasting taxpayer dollars on what amount to “get-rich-quick” schemes and to start making improvements to signals that actually enhance safety and benefit the driving public.

If the driver is going the POSTED speed limit, this "moment of uncertainty" you speak of would be reduced.

That will make them take them down immediately. Demand they give you a house too. They will have to give it to you if you say it loud enough. Demand they convert city hall into multi-level farmland. Demand they make Michael the new mayor. All you have to do is state your opinions loudly, with raw emotion, you don't even have to know what you are talking about. Right Michael? That fixes everything. Good advice. Or not.

No, but only we can get them to think about it, or realize what a waste of money it is, by DEMANDING that they stop wasting out money and look into it, dont you know how it works? Or is St. Louis different? It;s not a clan meeting, over here.

I'm not in St. Louis, my service provider is based there and this server reads that IP address and displays it automatically.
Rallying people around you and making noise fixes nothing. Do research and provide hard data. Use facts and then present them in a public forum. Demands without foundation are pointless. Telling other people to go demand is not empowerment. While your drive is admirable your technique guarantees failure. Wake up.

the cameras has nothing to do with safety. it's all about "money". if safety was something that came out of it then it's great but for the city it's always about generating money. it doesn't reduce accident and even cause more accident as people speed up to avoid being caught by the cameras or stop abruptly to avoid the cameras and causing an accident. it's the same crap as the "hand-free" law. it's not the hand-free or hand-on because it's the conversation that caused distraction and not the phone unless it's texting.
