I was told that there is a silver mine in Carter county that the where about is still a mystery. Talk to surveyors I bet they could give you some history on it. I hope you get response. Are you going to write an article about this? Carter county does have more history than what is given credit for.

Legend has it the mine was in Grahn in 1800's.I remember one of my teachers in elementary school telling us about it when we had Ky studies. If I remember right the location was lost when the last man who knew it from a group of shady characters died. Did you also know there once was a health spa somewhere on Aden rd. in Grahn located where there were some hot springs. The train would bring people there from all over the country.

There was record of a Jacob Sprinkle that mined silver from the mouth of Mills Branch and Rock Run. Lewis County Court Records show that he was arrested and tried for attempting to make silver coins for US currency. The coins contained a great deal of silver, but did not meet enough criteria to be claimed counterfeit and therefore was let go.

Jurors that sat for the trial were residents of the Kinney region.

Unsure if there is a Mills Branch in Lewis County, but there is in Carter County (which is just a few miles from Lewis County) "Kenney" is an area located inside Lewis County near Carter.

From one point to the other is probably a 10 mile stretch.

Always heard silver was mined in Carter County.

I do know that Carter County was extensively mined for clay and area of Blueberry Ridge has several "forgotten" tunneled mines and lots of clay pits all over it.

The Grahn road over the hill from the church houses is called Mill Branch. It is down the road from the Clifty and Barker Flats turn off. people get it mixed up with Mills Branch in Olive Hill all the time.

To the best of my knowledge was it not a cave that the silver coins and gold bars were hidden in? Seems they were supposed to be contained in small barrells. There was a large flat rock covering the hole that they were hidden in. There was supposed to be a large rock that looked out of place not to far from it with a snake carved in it somewhere. From there you were supposed to be able to look across the valley to a cliff lined with cedar trees and at the bottem of that hill there was supposed to be a spring. If you went down into the hole it dropped so many feet then moved foreward so many feet before opening up into a room where the treasure was hidden. I don't remember if Swift was killed or died before he could make it back to Ky to retrieve it. Some friens and I spent a lot of time one summer searcing for it.

About the same place I was speaking of. Had a lot of fun searching. The cave we found at the time had fallen in after you went so far back. Would love to do it again!
