We had a discussion today at work. I said everyone gets the death rattle before they die UNLESS they have a massive heart attack, stroke, or some instant event that kills them. I said I recalled when my dad was passing we were told when his occurred it would be 24/48 give or take. The other person said not everyone has the death rattle. If there are any medical people who can offer insight on this let me know.

It doesn't happen to everyone, mainly in people with pre-exsisting repiratory and circulatory problems, really bad if they get Pneumonia before they pass.
It is caused by a mucus build up in the Airway and the breath passing thru it, gets louder as the Lungs and bronchial Tubes collect more fluid and get weaker with the onset of the dying Process and the Lungs basically struggle to function.
In the end it can become more of a Gurgle than Rattle as the lungs begin to collapse.

I'm no medical expert by any means, My Mom's Dr. explained all that to me after she had a Severe Stroke and she couldn't breathe on her own, the Dr. was preparing the Bedside family members for what was to come after we had her removed from the respirator. Not sure how long it can last, with Mother it began as a loud wheeze and grew in intensity til it was a rattle, it was about 10-15 mins.
hmmm

I've never heard of anything like that. Are you saying this happens to every person who dies?
