Full story: Chicago Tribune

Alaska's Kodiak Island is being slammed by a swarm of earthquakes - one with a magnitude of at least 5.9. Richard Buckmaster, a geophysicist at the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo., says the southeast region of the island was hit Saturday by 20 earthquakes with magnitudes of 2.6 or greater.

This is horrible! I graduated from West Anchorage High School in 1981. I remember native Alaskans telling me about the horrors of the 1964 earthquake. I saw pictures of 4th street in Anchorage where half of the road was gone. My high school sits on top of mountain overlooking Cook Inlet. The scenery is beautiful. I am afraid some day there will be an earthquake and level that area. There was an earthquake in Irving today, too. It was felt from parts of north Irving all the way over to Fort Worth and Grand Prairie. We had a small earthquake here last October during Halloween. There are a lot of Californians that have moved here that are mocking us because we don't know how to deal with earthquakes. Who would ever would have thought Texas would have earthquakes? If we had a bad one, lots of people would die because we aren't prepared for it. One man said his daughter became so frightened this morning that she started throwing us. As soon as the tremors stopped, she quit throwing up.

I think the people that labelled this a "swarm" of earthquakes are on

This article originated in the Anchorage Daily News, run by a bunch of Californians who can't tell a mosquito from a moose. As much as I would like to pin something on them and call them the truly stupid people they are, swarm is a term used in connection with earthquakes. Earthquake swarms are events where a local area experiences sequences of many earthquakes striking in a relatively short period of time. The length of time used to define the swarm itself varies, an event may be on the order of days, weeks, or months. They are differentiated from earthquakes succeeded by a series of aftershocks by the observation that no single earthquake in the sequence is obviously the main shock. Earthquake swarms are one of the events typically preceding eruptions of volcanoes. Hopefully, this won't be a precursor to anything.

I wish more people who responded to news articles had "knowledgeable" replies rather than the "negative" ones we could all do without.

I was thinking the same thing about there being "swarms of earthquakes," but look up swarm in the dictionary and you will find that it is the correct word for the earthquakes that occurred.

Bobby Jindal says we should stop spending money on ridiculous things like volcano monitoring. Shortly after Jindal's statement, Mount Redoubt blow up in Alaska, home state of Sara Palin. Nothing like saying the right thing at the right time.
